can anybody weld an exhaust?

« on: August 08, 2011, 07:28:06 PM »
Hey guys,
I found an exhaust for the bus  :whitebay:. unfortunately it needs some work and I would like to know, who can fix it. I dont have the right tools over here :( ... is there somebody who wants to do it? I can offer some bus parts, help and/or cash of course. Need to go through emission tests,...  >:(

here is what the mess looks like. 6 new bolts and close 3 holes.

Thank you!

what tools do you need specifically?

I have a hobart 187 welder if that would help. I've never welded an exhaust, but I'd help or try.

Eike,
Aren't those 3 holes used for the EGR system on this thing?
Also, aren't those "bolts" actually screw in studs?
I have a pretty good metric tap set and a welder if you need to use it.
I have welded very rusted exhausts before, it is tedious.
Let me know if you need help.

Yes, of course those are studs, I just could think of the word, and since you all know that I barely speak english, I thought you would understand. :D

Yes those holes are for the EGR, mine didnt have that and the exhaust came of a cali bus.

Can anyone of you help during the week after work? :) Thanks a lot for the quik help!

Emission test ?   What year model is your van ?  Does your van have fuel injection ?  Have fun getting those studs out. You might get lucky.

its a late model with FI. I know its a pain, done it several times on the heads  ::) not always successfully... But thats the only exhaust in one piece that i could find.

nick, do you have a grinder and drill? I would bring the drills and grinderpads? (how are they called?)
Do you need any bus parts?

What I was getting at is if your van is a '74 or older you don't need a emission check. I believe you van is now old enough to use a Antique Tag.(25 years old)
You buy it one time and it is  permanent (forever) and I think that alone should exempt your van from going through emission checks.

Yes, I do have a drill and a grinder. You are welcome to come over and use what you need. Bring the drill bits and grinding discs and I have plenty of welding wire. I also have a torch set if you need that. I'm usually available after 5:30pm.

the godfather is onto something. I believe you said its a '79 bus. Vehicles 74 and before have to be emission tested and it can be very annoying. You might be able to get the antique tag and avoid the emissions testing all together. I'm not 100% certain on that but I will check.

From the antique tags requirements:
Quote
The vehicle must be 25 years old with a non-modified engine and body. An antique motor vehicle can be a passenger vehicle or a motorcycle; however, the fee is the same for both. An antique plate may not be transferred from one vehicle to another. If the motor vehicle owner to whom an antique license has been issued sells the vehicle, purchases another antique vehicle and wishes to retain the same plate, he may do so by paying the full fee. A motor vehicle registered as an antique solely as a collector's item can only be used for participation in club activities, exhibits, tours, parades and similar uses; and which may be used for general transportation only on Saturday and Sunday.
The annual fee for this plate is $26.75 and it can not be personalized.

And in regards to the emissions testing:
Quote
Q. Are there any exceptions?
A. Yes.  Motorcycles, 100% electric powered vehicles, new vehicles supported by an M.S.O. being registered for the
first time and up to one year from the registration month, antiques (25 years or older and registered as antique),
tactical military vehicles, vehicles out of the testing area, i.e. college students, military, must apply for an
exemption from State Air Pollution Control, (866) 329-9632.

Looks like you could get around it by registering it as an antique! There are restrictions, but people rarely get in trouble for it. You can see old caprice's running down 23rd st all the time with antique tags. Maybe they are going to gang- er- "club" activity! You'll still need an exhaust though...

Just move south of the TN state line.  No emmisions testing needed here.  In fact, you don't even need a title for anything older than 85.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I put a '76 f.i. Beetle through there and there was no problem. With the emissions standards they have for a '79 you'll be fine as long as its not belching smoke out the pipe!

Thats what I meant to say... its 75 and newer are required, 74 and before are exempt. My '75 Landcruiser has to be tested and fails every now and then.

You could move south...but it'll cost you in income tax!!! You should move more north and or east and west to avoid both!

Let me know when would be a good time. I'll just let you do your thing and try to stay out of the way.
