cali custom?

« on: June 09, 2011, 01:31:39 AM »
I hear that phrase get tossed around a lot, on bugs and other cars. What exactly makes a car "cal custom" or "cali custom". Maybe this is something obvious i should know already, but oh well. Cant know if you dont ask.

my cal custom bug i built in 94 was lowered with all the chrome shaved, no door handle , no embles, custom interior, smooth everything, custom wheels. shaved lights.  Also seen on cal custom cars frenched items like antennas and plates, suicide doors, chopped top, awesome paint and custom graphics

Don't forget louvered decklids, and 5-spoke empi wheels (most true cal-look enthusiasts regard the cars that are best suited for this destiny in life are pre-'67 bugs.)

And, they often have a "rake" to them, with the rear being set higher than the front.  Small tires on the front, and some real fat rubber under the rear, often connected to a built up engine.

All that I know is that the window rubber is usually cheaper than the one with the groves in it. The grooves are to hold the chrome trim and the cali look rubbers are just smooth!

if you have ever tried to get that chrome back in the window you would know the other reason why poeple don't put the trim back in the window

Huh, I always thought the no chrome trim in the seal was a euro thing.

The chrome trim was mainly used for US bound vehicles while Europe (and most of the rest of the world) got the plain seals, so yeah, it is technically more of a "Euro" thing . . . but it was made popular in the US by the "California Look" Beetles.
