I just found a new favorite site to log onto.

I want to be rich.  As soon as i win the lottery, I will not buy a fast car, I will buy an original Schwimmwagen.

Me too Grasshopper.   The big difference between the standard KDF and the Type-82e is the fact that the 82e was using the Kubel running gear , tranny with reduction gears  ( same as the barndoor Type-2's) and raised front spindles for extra ground clearance, about 18" from crankcase to ground. The  82e is what I'm hoping to get finished one of these days.  I already have the pan and running gear finished and have the rear split window kit.

Kinda of interesting to see a dark grey Kubel with the the fat desert tire's and rims. Most of the time the car was desert tan in color and used by Rommel's Guys in the Africa Corp.
SC, There are a number of books on the history of the WW-2  VW's.
Did you know that VW was playing with a Half Track version of the Kubel.
It never happened though. Just a few prototypes were made.

Just think how much better they would have run if the Germans had use Kingsfords match lite . They could have shot at the Allies and cooked "Brats" at the same time.

Sorta like your charcoal grill only wood chips and such being used and they let it smolder giving off a thick smoke and gases and no flame. The gas is collected in a boiler like container and then to the engine. It would run the engine but the octane rating was so low that the engine performed badly. But in Europe during WW-2 Gasoline was in such great shortage that people had to convert to this principle or you didn't go anywhere. Terrible way to treat your car but people did what they had to do.
If anyone of you folks can explain it better in detail jump on here. Interesting subject.  :-k
