Avanti

« on: August 03, 2012, 10:19:30 AM »
I was driving home yesterday and saw the ugliest car I've ever seen (well except for that front half looks like a '30s car, back half looks like an '80s sedan thing...)

The back says Avanti and there is no grill. I read up on Avantis and they appear to have only been made by Studebaker for a very short time before they tumbled through a few entrepreneurs' hands. They were designed in the early '60s and went under in about '91 or '92

Any one know what  year this one is?

Hard to tell. I think the last batch of Avantis were made in Canada with GM running gear. I use to service a 1961 model when I was working in a service station. Fit and finish was nothing to write home about , But that dang thing would fly. It would give a Corvette all it wanted at the time. A real sleeper. It may have had a 289ci V8( not sure) with some mods, a Paxton belt driven supercharger, 4 speed / pos traction. All the wiring under the hood was run through stainless steel conduits. Very hard to run down wiring problems.

I am pretty sure that is a Studebaker.
Yes, a studebaker.
And you wonder why they went out of business...

A late '70s or an '80s model, judging by the bumpers and lack of "Studebaker" badging.

I guess I missed the date of the Avanti I use to service by a year. I do know it was the first year model .  You are right Anthony about the badging.

From what I've read, studebaker stopped making them and then sold the rights to a guy who was a dealer. He made them better but then he got old and it was passed down through the 80s and closed in 92. So it was a very similar model for 30 years... That could never work!!!!

IIRC the older models had round headlights, and the ones made after changing owners had square headlights, but can't remember when they changed.
