anyone work at the vw factory?

« on: January 12, 2012, 09:16:28 PM »
hey folks, NY guy here looking at engineering jobs at the new VW plant. I am pretty interested in the TN area, NY sucks from pretty much every aspect.

I was wondering if anyone works at the VW factory and could share opinions and experiences?

thanks a ton!

We have a few guys who work at the plant. I think only sunnybug is on the forum but relatives of the others might be.

I find it funny that just a day after I got in an arguement with an angry misplaced Yankee in the hardware aisle at ACE hardware, another northerner is inquiring about how much NY sucks and he wants to come south!  Granted the angry guy was from Boston, but he said he was amazed at the poverty of the south. He was amazed at what our non-labor union jobs paid (or robbed) us and how  him making $27 pushing a broom in Boston made the $600,000 average home price ok. Then he bashed our lack of industry and said that the vw plant only brought in 1,200 jobs...but he contradicted himself regarding "their" industry when he mentioned all of their factories were 2 million dollar condos...

There was also a lady argueing with him and she was from Smyrna TN (where the Nissan plant is) and she had great counter points. We pointed out that the right to work is what attracted new industries to the area and that although the plant was actually employing ~2,500(I think), there are usually lots of suppliers that come in and create lots of spin off jobs. And to his disgust at our supposed low paying jobs, we said that our average home price was less than a third of theirs. His disgust turned from anti-southern to anti-jobs going overseas. It also came out that he had to follow his ex-wife in order to have any contact with his daughter so he was a reason to not want to be here.

I say all of that because I wanted to tell someone about how odd this 20 minute conversation was at the hardware store AND because you asked and he pointed out the difference between up there and down here. I don't know what VW is looking for in an engineer, but it seems like they want people with automotive assembly line experience. You should also keep your ears up for some surrounding supplier jobs because they might start popping up. Also look at Smyrna's Nissan plant.

Good luck!

To truly become a galvanized Yankee, you have to learn to love Blackeyed peas, Fried Okra, cornbread and learn to say "Da Gum" when things don't turn out the way they should.  ;D
As KC said ,the VW crowd is pretty laid back and we have a lot of fun.  Come join us. We will leave the light on for you :D      PS, You will have to learn what Kudzu is  ??? ???

PS, You will have to learn what Kudzu is  ??? ???

You'll also have to learn stuff like "There's more than one way to skin a cat" and eating a "Cat Head Biscuit" has nothing whatsoever to do with a cat.  ;D

You might not like our winter weather down here.  It got down in the 20's last night and about half the schools in the area were either closed or started after a 2 hour delay.   ;)

I know, "snowmageddon 2012" was a dusting on the cars....
But man that wind was biting this morning at the bus stop.
@ OP: these warm winters will thin your blood, and once you go south you can't go back....
