There won't be one but I've got the diagrams if you need them. I believe they're also on Type2.com. You'll probably want to go ahead and use the second battery, too, since that's what it runs on when it's not plugged up to shore power. If you find a fridge, it might come with the harness, too. At their best they're only good up to 80-85 degrees inside the bus, but if you're going to hook up an air conditioner in the window, it'd be useful. Also I've got a couple of tricks to help it out...

ok so now I need to take the drive plate off.... can I get one of those 12 point star sockets at autozone or does anyone have one I can buy off of them?

Also I still need suggestions on some good places to buy rebuild kits from if anyone knows any...

I doubt you will find a rebuild "kit" in one box.   More than likey you will have to buy parts separately maybe even from different vendors.  You will need the engine #.
I think I saw the remains of a factory air cleaner part in one pic. right over the # 1 cylinder.  This tells me that your engine MIGHT not be the correct engine for the year as your van as it could be a 1.7 litre twin carb engine from 1972. Only the engine # will tell the tale. You could clean off the top of one piston to see the bore size stamped in the top. That would be a clue to what you are dealing with.
As to the 12 point tool , I would fall over dead if Auto-Zone had one of those. There were two sizes. The Germans called them "cheese head" bolts. That plate will have to come off before you can split the case as there are two case bolts behind it.
Check all the vendors in Hot VWs for parts.  Some of the guys in the club could help you out here better than I can.

Are you talking about an 8mm "triple square" socket, sometimes used for CV bolts? I have two of them.

It looks like a 12 point CV joint tool but larger.

I might. I haven't looked lately. I have been trying to remember what I used. It seemed that I used a socket I already had and it could have been a Rabbit head bolt socket. Some of them were 12mm 12point( serated ?)

An AW's an 1800 case. Don't recall the piston size offhand. They bored the 1700 to the 1800, then stroked the 1800 to 2000. At any rate, your heads have the biggest valves of the three, so keep them!

I've got one of the tools to take off the flex plate-I got it (in a set of 5) at Pep Boys or Autozone, one. As I remember, one of the sizes in the set worked for the CV joints, too. You can borrow it or hunt for one, but they might have gotten rid of them to make room for neon exhaust tips or some crap, but I digress.

Don't quote me on this,but I think 92.98 p/c were 1800 and 94's were on the 2 litre.
From passed experience on these "varments" it seemed that the 1.7 litre were the most reliable in the long run when you did something about the sorry ass fuel system. It was downhill from then on.
I'm sure that Anthony will be all over me on that one  but he didn't have to work on 10-15 of those things a week :(
Anthony is correct about the big valve head. They are nice to have . If you rebuild your engine and having one ruined head , I wonder if you could find another head. Maybe you will get lucky. I sure don't keep up with Type-4 things 8)
