Anyone interested in lending an extra hand?

« on: June 22, 2008, 10:58:49 AM »
I am going to be pulling the motor in my bus, and I could sure use an extra hand in the process.... I am starting to take the engine tin off today, along with the intake, but I could use a hand with the actual puling out of the motor.

I dont mind doing the dirty work, I have pretty much all the tools needed, and the job wil be done in my garage.... let me know if anyone can help! (and bring a rolling jack... not sure where mine is)

Shoot.  If I wasn't already up to my neck in stuff, I would do it.
Plus, I just got back in from being gone all weekend...
Here's a helpful hint:  Get one of those motorcycle/ATV jacks from Harbor Freight...you can almost pull the engine by yourself with that thing.

I can help if I'm not busy. It's been a while since I've dropped an engine. If you haven't already, read up on (and possibly print out) Ratwell's engine removal guide: http://www.ratwell.com/technical/EngineRemoval.html

While the engine's out, it's also a good idea to open up the firewall and replace some of the vent lines for the fuel tank, the fuel filler neck, and the fuel sender.

And like Travis says, one of those ATV jacks makes it a lot easier.

Just curious, You don't have to remove any sheet metal to drop the engine out unless you just want to.
The bike jacks that Travis was talking about is a good Idea for you. Trying to balance one of those big Type-4 engine on a shop size floor jack can be a problem much less trying to use one of those little tiny "make belive" jacks.  Trying to get the engine back up on the jack after its fallen off a dozen times while its still under the van can make you speak in unknown tonques.

Well, If you JUST have to have a Bus/Van/Westy buy one that the owner has done most of the "Grunt" work already and save yourself from having to get a Fed. Grant .

Found a 1976 Westy that has a 2.0l engine in it, guy says trannie whines in 1-3 but 4 is quiet.  Is this normal?  Has all interior but has an icebox instead of a fridge and stove.  are the fridges easy to install, and is the wireing harness already there for it or am I going to have to run a new one back there.  It also comes with a Westy Stool, whatever that is, he said it was a rare item.
Guy is going to trade for my car hauler.  I'll post photos when I get them, and decide if I am truly interested.

What color is it? You know the club imposes extra dues on green Westies. If it's got the icebox and no stove/fridge then it's a standard Westfalia (like mine) and not a deluxe model. I suppose if you got a fridge out of a deluxe you could put it in, but I've never heard of anyone swapping them out.

Hopefully the engine is still fuel injected. The Godfather loves those. Let me know if you need someone to go inspect it with you.

He's right about the stool being rare too. They came with the deluxe campers  and they can be hard to find, particularly if they still have the yellow bucket inside (and the even rarer yellow bucket lid). The stool sits between the two front seats and can be used for storage, or when camping you can pull it out and use it as an extra seat inside. This is mine, didn't come with the bus originally but Richard bought it and used it.

Well, I got the motor pulled tonight, with the eager help of a 16 year old neighbor. He did most of the work, and even laughed when I gave him a pencil to plug the gas line with ( and trust me, I laughed MUCH MUCH harder when it took him about a minute to get the pencil firmly in the hose...if you can imagine how much gas can flow out of a line when gravity takes hold of things...)

Anyways, after getting the motor out and setting it on a makeshift table, I started removng the rest of the tin to get a good look at everything and the first thingI noticed was that both te front and rear main seals were leaking... Oh and for anyone who hasnt had to do this yet, when removing engine tin, make sure to have a set of LOCKING PLIERS HANDY! it appears those screws should never have come with a flathead top on them...

I also noticed before pulling the motor that the vacuum line going from my transmission to the carb had COME OFF.... so I was thinking that was probably why my transmission wasnt shifting right! (lets hope anyways for now)

I will add pics later after passing out from lifting the motor (with heater boxes attatched) onto a 4 foot high table.

I'm just glad that part is out of the way... its been 12 years since I've pulled a vw motor... and I had forgotten just how much "fun" it can be.

Good for you !!!    Ah !  Nothing like 87 octane underarm deodorant
I wouldn't tell to many people about getting a 16 year old to crawl under your van.  You might get arrested for Child abuse
I have been told that the older you get,  the heavier a VW engine seems to get. Could this be true ??
Just think, You are going to have to put all this "stuff" back in the van.
     Oh happy day \:D/

Fun engine "pulls" ?    Try this one.    '75 fuel injected vert with A/C , Automatic-Stick with a "locked up" engine. Talk about  fun !   I don't have to explane this one to old time VW techs
