Another New Guy (With a Title Question to Boot)

« on: September 29, 2008, 07:47:48 PM »
Hey everyone.

Back in May, I received a couple of Beetle (66 and 68) and a beat up 59 Ford from a friend's mother-in-law when her husband passed away (pictures of the 66 will be put in the gallery forum soon).  I've been wanting to get into fixing up cars, and this was a great opportunity.  The only cost was getting them out of his barn.

Unfortunately, she wasn't able to find the titles to the vehicles.  I also didn't have a Bill of Sale because they were gifts.

According to this I can get a Certificate of Ownership as long as I get the vehicles appraised by a licensed dealer and get the VIN verified.  Again, this poses a problem since none of the dealers I have called seem to do this.

So my question is twofold.  First, is there anybody in the Chattanooga area that performs this service?  Second, am I going about the process the wrong way when there is an easier solution to getting a title?

Thanks for any help, and I look forward to many great conversations here!

I will be happy to check with my Title clerk for you . I would think a gift letter would be acceptible. Do you know who held title previously?

Unfortunately, no.

The widow didn't know too much about the history of the vehicles.  Her late husband had another Beetle that he had restored beautifully (sadly burnt horribly in a fire) with a title, but she couldn't find the information for any of the others.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Thanks.  I've been trying to avoid putting her through anything else.  The family had all gone through a lot with the death, so I can't bring myself to ask anything of them.

The easiest solution is move to Georgia  . I assume there was no paperwork in the vehicles in question. If you can get me the Vin, Year, make and the name of the your friends father I can find out if the vehicles were indeed registered in his name and/or the wife. That's the first step.
Once ownership is determined then getting a title is the next step.

Thanks!  I wish I could make it, but I promised some friends I would go through a corn maze with them that night.  If that falls through (as things often do, haha) I'll be sure to show up.

I'm sorry, could you rephrase that?  I'm not sure what you meant with the question mark at the end.
