Many of our members own both air and watercooled VWs (and other watercooled non-VWs).  Some own just watercooled.
My first VW was an aircooled.  I now have 3 and know how to work on them all.
We've owned some watercooleds; a '98 Jetta, '93 Eurovan, and now own a '94 Golf.  I don't know much about working on it, but I am learning.
My first love was and still is an aircooled, but I'm learning about how to go about loving a watercooled.

I like them both.  Sometimes you want the power and acoutrements of a modern car, and sometimes you yearn for the simplicity and that great noise that comes from the engine behind you, not in front.  I got to follow a '57 Mercedes 190SL Cabrio (the coupe version is the "gullwing" Merc.)down Lookout Mountain this morning.  What a beautiful car! And what a sight to see a Beetle riding its bumper through the twistys!  That may be unrelated, but I wanted to share it. :;):

I have never owned a watercooled VW (unless you count the 86 Golf parts car I bought for $65 and parted out) and I've only worked on a few for family and friends when I "had" to . . . but that doesn't mean I don't like them!  In fact, growning up you couldn't have melted me an poured me into a VW of any kind (and they were ALL air-cooled back then).  That changed when I was in high school I read an article in Popular Science about the soon to be in production VW Diesel Pickup . . . I wanted one.  I wanted one bad.  Well, I never got one, but, the very first VW that I really, really wanted was water-cooled.  By the way, I'm still hoping to get one someday.

:D We own a 2001, New Passat, and are happy with it. The ride is comfortable and the heated seats feel really great this time of year!!! I have read of several problems with the newer VW's, but I guess we have been lucky so far with ours. It is just an individual taste thing as far as I see it. I fault no one if they dont like Water Cooled VW's, it is their choice.

We have both as you can tell by our signature.  I drive the New Beetle most of the time and have been very happy with it.  We must have a good one because we have already put 37,000 miles on it and haven't had any issues like those others have said they had with theirs.  Eventually I might want one of the convertibles too!!!

We also have both air-cooled and water-cooled. The newest is an '03 Eurovan Westy and next is an '02 New Beetle. The rest of our stable is all air-cooled with the oldest being the '67 Transporter. We love ALL of them.

Our club motto is "where air meets water" and we started at Bug-A-Paluza 5 honoring the water-cooled VWs and making them as important to the show as the air-cooled.
