Aircooled repair changes at R&M

« on: January 01, 2012, 09:48:41 PM »
Well, we are turning another page in the book of R&M and will no longer be doing aircooled repair. We started out taking in anything and everything and now have to make some tough choices.  I have been the only one at the shop working on all the vintage vehicles and it has become painfully obvious that it is costing us more than it is making us.  There is almost none of the older vehicles that can be repaired in a routine time frame and for a business like ours that is a problem.  We will still service the vehicles that have already been to us, we just won't be taking in any new patients. We appreciate the support of the aircooled community and are sorry for not being able to continue the service work.

Thank you!

Well , I can not blame you for that. After all you are running a business and have to make  a  living. With the prices for Air-cool parts and tracking them down , waiting for stuff to fix things then trying to explain the cost to the customer can test your patients and lets your lunch get cold.  You just about have to have a dedicated Air-cool VW shop and with that you will starve to death. For the second time in my VW career I'm doing the same thing. Grasshopper(Rick) and you   found out much earlier the way things were going. My body is falling apart so I am swapping lanes .  Whats sad is there is no one left full time around here to do the heavy work that I would trust. I can't and will not do it. There are a few VW hobbyist out there but you have to be careful as they can cost you money and lead you down the garden path in the long run. I might still do some bench work if I feel like it.

Ha! I guess I should have come here before I called! I was going to post about this, but I see it's been taken care of. Makes sense. Anyone want to get the brakes working on a sad little '71 Ghia? I will be putting an ad up in the classifieds section in a day or so. Thanks, and having done my share of air-cooled repair, I understand entirely.

:(  It's sad that this area's air-cooled community is loosing it's last reputable shop (at least the last one that I know of). . . but I often wondered how long R & M could continue to do this type of work.  Mechanics are just like everyone else.  You gott'a make enough money to feed your family and keep a roof over your head . . . and I really don't see any way to do that working on air-cooled VWs.

I guess owning an air-cooled VW in this area has truely become a "hobby."  If you can't fix it yourself, you better have friends who can help you learn.  Guess that makes organizations like the Volks Folks more important than ever.   :scvf:

It really does stink for those driving them that don't know how, or simply can't devote the time to fix them....

I know I have said it before.... when what I have at the house that isn't mine is finally gone (that's down to just two now), there will be no more.  Simply isn't worth the time it takes from my family, and it really is hard to make any real money off of them.

I had been sending everybody to Rick (the other one  ;D) for a while now.  Sorry to hear, but completely understandable.

I can see it now... next time I'm at my in-laws, my bus can have issues that somehow cause it to roll down the hill and end up in your driveway, unable to move without repair... LOL

That would be OK. Grasshopper(Rick) needs a fire pit to cook his weenies ;D

Very Very sad!  :(
Luckily I was quick enough to get the bus fixed before. Some great work! Just put about 500miles on it the last 2 weeks!

Thank you very much!  :whitebay:

I just want to say thanks to everyone who has posted!  We will still service your vehicle if it has been here already, ;) I just can't bring any new ones in.  :(
