AAAHHHH tired of it....

« on: March 13, 2009, 12:52:50 PM »
Sorry guys i had to get that out of my system. I am getting so tired with the problems of this bug. As you know in my last postings i got all the stuff back on and it started up fine but with just some sputter due to the dying distributor. Well well yesterday i went out to run it and it would just crank and not start. Today it almost did but it is acting like it is flooding or such and not starting. I am so ready to haul it some where and leave it. Thanks for letting me vent................  :x

Let me know where you plan on dropping it off. Just kidding. This is all part of the fun of owning a classic. You will learn from it and next time you can fix it like a pro.

it may be that it is almost 30 degrees colder today than it was the other day when it started fine. Maybe when it warms up it will start. Who knows..?

Tuesday:throttle cable extension broke drove home with a parachute cord for a throttle.

Wed: gear shifter pretty much fell apart in my hands drove home with a screwdriver to shift with.

Hey Scott that does make me feel better. Thanks .....   . All it is doing now is cranking. It almost started twice today but to no avail. I have the intake and valve covers i got from you. I took the carb and put the new parts ( gaskets etc in it ) that it needed and installed it. Fter getting all the wires etc hooked back i turned the key and it started up and ran like it did when w figured out it needed the distributor. I ran it for about 15 minutes and then turned it off. The next day i went out and it started fine again. Then the temp droped 30 degrees and it will not start. as for the distributor it is still in the box in my kitchen. I have not even attempted that. If i get it going again i plan on just taking it to R&M Automotive and have Rick fix it right.

My dad broke his shifter lever off his motorcycle in Iowa and had to use a vice grip as a shifter lever all the way back here.

Could it be the choke?
Is it aligned to the mark on the carb?
Is it unplugged?

I don't think 30 degree weather has anything to do with it. I think he just needs some help but I can't do it  until I finish getting the interior in the shop up.You can barely get in there right now with all the paneling etc. everywhere .

Take it out to R&M, let Rick fix it then don't touch it. That ditributer has alot of play in it,I doubt it can hold any type of timing

Ok guys when i got home today from running errands i decided to try and start the bug. Well it took a couple times and i had the wife crank it while held the choke flap ( correct name ? ) closed on the top of the carb and it started up good and we ran it for a bit. We then started it again and with out me holding the flap closed and it started but kept bogging down. If i pulled close the flap it ran better and bogged if i let it open up. So you tell me if the choke needs work.

I also was at MCKAYS today and just glimpsed at the automotive section. I bought an " Official service manual " for volkswagons 66-69 beetles and ghias for $5.25. It may teach me something. They also had one on how to " hotrod volkswagon aircooled engines " and one other one for aircooled vws. I left those 2 there if anyone wants them.

Have you looked at the club's training film strips yet?  If not, check 'em out.  There are two on ignition timing, one on valve adjustment and one on carb adjustment (the carb adjustment film strip can be a little hard to follow because the explain mulitple carbs).  These are old technician training film strips the club purchased several years ago.  We've got more, just haven't gotten them converted to digital video yet.

I have not looked at the club's training films yet. Thanks for telling me about them as i will now watch them as i have time to learn something new. However today after the rain stoped i took off the choke and reset it in " correctly " as i found it was way off. I did that and turned the key and she " STARTED " whooo hooo. It still does not hold the timing right and runs a little fast but it starts and runs good enough to take to R&M monday or tuesday so it can be done right. Amazing what you can do if you buy an official repaire manual for $5.25 and read up on the problem and do what they say to fix it.

I just may have it ready for Bugapalooza. Driving it there but not entering it in any catagory..............

I hear ya,but the 62 treats me as well as I treat it. As long as I keep up with the maintenance and drive civil then it's fine. Too bad recently I haven't done either. My wifes Nissan Frontier doesn't have heated seats but it's a nice change from time to time. :?
