78 Super Conv Top. Etc

« on: September 06, 2008, 11:19:54 AM »
I Have A 78 SUPER that needs a new top. Do you have any suggestions? Is it worth the difference for the canvas top; over the vinyl? Do you always replace an original headliner? Is there anyone who
you suggest in Chatt to install it? Is there anyone on the list that has installed one themselves. I have installed a top on Rabbit convettible and I undretstand this is much worse. However, i have worked on VW/AUDI'S most of my life.I am going to have the car sandblasted next week. Any suggestions or anything i should know or lookout for before having this done? Who do you use? I have used a man in Chattanooga Valley before and was satisfied. He said about $300 for the car inside and out. What kind of sealer, rustproof, primer do you  recommend? From what store do you buy it? This car has been setting for about 20 years. Any help would be greatly app[reciated. New to the list.

Welcome to the board. I've done a Ghia top before, including headliner and stuffing. It can be done, provided you have a good bit of time, a dry place to leave the car, a set of factory directions or the Bugstuff video, a little skill with fabrics and lots of patience. It took me two weeks of afternoons and at least two years off my life, but it turned out well.

If you've got the money, Grants on Broad St. is the place to go.

As to paint, I just had the guys at Express Auto Body on Rossville Blvd do my Spitfire and it was a good job for the money (around $700 with a little bodywork). You might check them out.
