Fred Bennett is probably the best around. He had a trim shop off Rossville Blvd for over 40 yrs and is now working out of his home. He has a very good reputation but doesn't give his work away. You're looking at a new top costing you approx. $2500. That is completely in line with others. I realize that sounds high but have you ever heard the saying "you get what you pay for"?  I'm sure there may be other people around who may be a little bit cheaper but if they haven't installed vert roofs on a Beetle before, chances are it will come out looking like crap.

Let me know if you want his phone number.

I installed one myself on a 75 Super Beetle.  Looking at the frame of the 73 and up style roof and earlier roofs, mine was an "easy" one.  It looks like crap.  I broke the rear window frame so for the last 5 years we haven't had rear window.  It's 5 years old and looks worse than the one I took off.  In other words, as a do it yourself project, it can be done . . . but don't unless there is absoultly no other option!!!  If you can afford it, pay the price and get an experianced profesional to do it right.

I know you were wanting to know who could do this for you . . . I'm just telling you this 'cause after you price the job you might consider doing it yoursef.

Grant's on Broad St.  would be someone to check with, also.  They've been around a while and have done it all.  They did a LeBaron top for me years ago and it came out fine.  Like Zen said, it's not cheap because to do it right you've got to replace all 3 layers and that's as much labor as doing 3 tops!

On the other hand, I did the top on a Ghia myself a few years ago and thought it came out really well.  If you're patient, methodical, mechanically inclined and have a dry place to keep the car for a few weeks of off-and-on work it can be done.  Get instruction books and videos and study them well before doing anything.  I figured the gamble was worth the thousand-dollars-plus I'd be saving.  No shop will ever care as much about your car as you!
