1972 Super Beetle up for auction

« on: February 04, 2005, 12:24:24 AM »
Talia's school is having a fund raiser in the form of an auction.  Among lots of other things, there is a 1972 Super Beetle up for auction.  Here is the note I got from the PTA president:

This just in.....Big News for CSLA Auction!!!!

Are you suffering from the high gas prices? Do you drive a gas guzzler? Do you have a student going off to college or just learning to drive?

Then look no further - we have the perfect car for you! It's a vintage 1972 green Volkswagon Super Beetle with a new engine that has only 5K miles on it. It has been routinely serviced and is in great condition.

Be sure to buy a $1.00 bidding paddle and take advantage of this great deal at the auction on Feb. 25.

If anyone wants any more info about this, I will try to find out more.  I just thought it was neat.  Today, when we were picking up Talia from school, one of the parents asked me if that was my VW that was going to be in the auction.  I told him, "No, it's a Super..."

I will try to get more information for you...don't know if the Super is at the school.  Didn't see it there this morning.

It is going to be at CSLA, as far as I know.

Sorry I don't have all the info yet.

I hope the Hamilton County Board of Education will take note of this car and bid, too.  They need to UPDATE some of their maintenence fleet!  Plus, they could have a Bug-stuffing with the few maintenence personnel they haven't cut from their budget!  I'm not bitter, but I just spent the last week doing my Ray Charles impression 8)  through a dark hallway to my room after 3 of the 7 light fixtures blew bulbs in the past few weeks.  I also had to sweep my own room last week when it didn't get done, but I digress...

My point is: the schools badly need the funds, because we're sure not getting any from the HCDE or County Commissioners.  Older buildings, such as CSLA, can be especially in need (ask me about "no-heat Wednescay")
so...
Bid early and bid often! :D
Travis, please keep us posted on the details!

Where is this auction going to be held?

At the CSLA Auditorium on February 25.  The silent auction will start at 4:00pm and will run concurrently with the live auction which starts at 6:00pm.  CSLA is on the corner of Vance Rd. and East Brainerd Rd.

I was told today that the Super will be on the school property starting February 14 to the date of the auction.

Come to the auction, buy (yes, buy) a bidder's paddle for $1, and go crazy!  I have no idea what the starting bid is, but I was told that the auctioneer will determine that, hopefully before the day of the auction.
There will be lots of other items for auction too.

The Beetle is there at the school now.  It is green.

I have conflicting news...someone sent me a email from the school with the title "1974 Super Beetle", yet previous messages said "1972 Super Beetle".  I haven't gotten out of my car to inspect it, but it does have a flat windshield.  Didn't the '72 Super have a flat windshield?  Don't know if it has struts or not.  It looks pretty good...although it looks like it has a rusty muffler and tailpipes. Duh.

Also, the silent auction is still starting a 4pm, but the live auction starts at 7pm, not 6pm.
I will probably try to go early today to get Talia and get out of my car to look at it.

Is there any way you can get a picture of the car, so I can put this on the front page?

Great. I got an email from someone at the school asking if we wouldn't mind promoting it for them. I'll stick it on the front page when you get some pictures taken. Thanks, Travis.

You can spot a super by looking at the front apron.  On supers, it will kind'a roll back up under the car with nothing behind it.  Most of them have a row of louvers in the apron, but some euro supers didn't have them and the solid apron is avalible aftermarket.  71 & 72 Supers had flat windshields and flat dashes just like standards.  73 and up had curved windshields and the big black "somewhat" more modern looking dash.  A 73 Super is the easiest to pick out down to the year from a distance . . . curved windshield, big taillights, non-shock-absorbing bumper brackets.
If it is a sedan and has the curved windshield and shock-absorbing bumper brackets, it's a 74 or 75 (75 was the last year for the super sedans).  All convertibles from 71 and up were supers.

Regardless of what the title says, the VIN will tell the tell.  The 3rd digit gives the last digit of the year.

I got word that the bug is indeed a 1972 model. Also the title and receipt are on the school property for anyone to inspect.

Travis, post your pictures or send them to me and I'll put all this on the front pgae.

Get the pics at http://gallery.volksfolks.org/72-Super-Beetle-up-for-auction

Yeah.  I looked at the VIN yesterday.  Also saw that there are struts up under the front end.  Couldn't get any good interior photos because the doors were locked.  The PTA director is going to give me the key next week to get inside, fire it up, get better interior pics, etc.

I will get those interior shots and post them next week.
Later!
