You know, I never had much faith in the Mayans. If they were so good at predicting the future, why aren't any of them still around? 
You can credit the Spanish for that, but just go to Mexico City and other areas and look around. You will see a lot of Mayan descendant's. The Spanish also destroyed a lot of the Mayan writings, tablets, carvings etc. It was the Spanish/Catholic way or the highway and of course a few new disease's didn't help.
