Here is a brief overview of the trip to High Country Bus Festival at Grandfather Mountain near Boone, NC on 7/26, 7/27 and 7/28. We met up with a 1973 Westy from the Atlanta area and took the Blue Ridge Parkway from Asheville, NC to Grandfather Mountain - awesome day and sights, at least 10 degrees cooler on the mountain! We arrived without incident around 3pm on Friday, and we were the 46th bus to register. Camps were already scattered across the field when we topped the hill to find our spot. We opted for an official campsite (we paid more for shade!) and set up camp. Throughout the weekend we RELAXED, looked over buses (a total of 152), ate, drank, and were VERY merry. We saw old and odd aquaintances, and met new ones. This festival is really one not to miss. If you want to check out the High Country website, go

There was live music, free breakfast and supper on Saturday, and a VW Family Feud game, hosted by Blistered Dawson, drunk cousin of Richard Dawson. There was also drawings for door prizes and a 50/50 drawing. I scored a detailing kit (valued at over $100) and a dash organizer for an '80-'83 Vanagon (I ended up giving it to an "odd" acquaintance with an '84...maybe it will fit).
All in all, it was a wonderful campout. I just wish that more of our members with busses would have been able to come along. Save your pennies for next year, July 25-27, 2003. I have already reserved a rather large shaded campsite with electricity, not too far away from the field where everybody else is in the sun, sans shade. The reserved sites around the field are already taken for next year, so that is just an indication of how big next year's event will be.
By the way, Anthony, I've got your LP tank for you.
