Okay, first, everything is in one piece...

That being said, the car handled horribly at first. It was loose (the back end wants to skid first, and the car spins...I know many of you know this, but just in case...) I worked on it between sessions Saturday and changed rear camber, shock setting, spring, tires, pressures-and in the race Saturday my engine cover started blowing off on lap 1. I had to pull in and lost two laps fixing it. I FINALLY got the handling right for Sunday and in the practice it was amazing. My time dropped 5 seconds per lap in 5 laps. Perfectly balanced 4-wheel drifts, steering with the throttle- perfect handling, although I've GOT to do something to get the shifter more precice-slop in the linkage. The engine is strong, too. Good pull to 6500, but running a little rich-it fouled the plugs during a caution and took a half lap to quit coughing. I'm nit-picking. This car hauls ass!

Sunday's race started with the worst pile-up I've seen from the cockpit. 5 cars (all from the faster classes) wrecked in turn 1 and the Vees all made it through the blinding smoke and debris. We spent the next 5 laps under caution. I finished 2nd and was .033 away from the fast lap of the race.

Overall-a steep learning curve (new car, new track) but we got it right by the end. Can't wait to get back to Atlanta!

Damn !!!!!!!   Way to go !  I sort of thought you might have to go through a , lets say a tune up period with the new car.  Hot Alanta ought to be a blast. Go get`em
.033 ? I can`t sneeze that quick. What did your plugs look like after the race ?  I think you did excellent considering all the crap you had to do just to keep the car "twixt " the lines.  :thumbs-up:  :thumbs-up:

Aaron, check the "Show us your VW" section under "The New Vee" heading for a picture. You can also google "formula vee" for plenty of different sites. They come in all shapes over the span of 40 years.

David, the plugs were sooty, after chugging through the pits, of course. I've got a nice long list of more stuff to do before the next race!

The next event for the SARRC road racing series is a double race weekend at Savannah on July 9-10. Quite a drive, but at least Savannah is at the end! 8)

The next Road Atlanta event is July 23. We actually get to practice, qualify, and race on Saturday! The only catch is this time we share the track with the "winged things", the Formula Contenentals, Formula Mazdas, a water-cooled Super Vee, etc. They are usually going 20-40MPH faster when they pass us on the straights. Fun to watch, but a little unnerving on the track!

the DAMNDEST thing...

« Reply #6 on: July 24, 2005, 10:56:39 AM »
In racing, I've had several damn things happen, from breaking a brake line which squirted fluid on the exhaust so it evaporated, leaving no indication there was anything leaking until I hit the brakes and nothing happened, to losing an axle nut in qualifying, running the rest of the session unaware that anything was wrong, and pulling the wheel off with one hand in the paddock.

This was the damndest.

First, in qualifying I was only .2 seconds off the pole speed and I diced with the polesitter for 4 laps before driving away from him. I felt pretty good about my chances.

The first attempt to start the race was waved off, so we took another lap under yellow to try again. As we bunched up and slowed right before the start, I had to brake hard. The brake pedal BROKE OFF.

Like I said, the DAMNDEST thing.

I limped it back to the paddock, looked at the piece of pedal, and found it had been broken before and someone had braized it back together. It was painted over and I had never noticed it, let alone imagined that someone would actually cheap out and "repair" something as critical as the brake pedal!

Thanks to that person, instead of the champagne of victory, I drank the tequilla of dissapointment.

Time to buy a new pedal cluster and go beat some ASS at the next event!
