First VWs Arrive in Chattanooga

« on: April 20, 2009, 10:27:58 PM »
For those of you who didn't get a chance to see it at the show, Ted Jones (of the Stevenson Bug Blast) brought us a copy of a picture that hangs on the wall of Conley Smith's office @ Conley Smith Chevrolet in Stevenson, AL.  The picture is of a young Conley and another man (unidentified at this time) standing in front of a Southern Railway double decker car hauler with what Conley says is the first load of VWs ever delivered to Chattanooga.  The date is unknown at this time, but my best guess is 1957.

The oldest records I can find about Southland Motors says they were an official VW Dealership in 1957.  There is one earlier dealership list posted on thesamba.com, and Southland isn't listed on it . . . but the exact date of that list isn't known.  The bugs on the train appear to be at least 1958 models (they have turn signals on the top of the fender).  The '58 model year started on August 1, 1957.

Does Conley Smith know when this photo was taken ?
Zen , Did you state that there was a dealer before Southland ?   I couldn't find it . What was the name ?   Did Smith work for this dealer ?
Dan Clippinger was a BMC dealer before they took on VW . It may have operated under a different name before they became Southland,
 a dedicated VW dealership only
I might be wrong here ,but I don't think the Clippinger's ever shipped VW's buy rail. I had a older friend that helped to drive new VWs up from a New Orleans P.O.E.  When I went to work for Southland in July '64 they had owned their own car hauler for awhile that made about two trips a week from Capitol Cars in Lanham  Maryland . They brought in new VWs this way as long as I worked for them.
I'm really curious about this. as I said before I will try to find Danny and check on all of this.

I found that site and still didn't see any other dealerships listed.
Southland Motors and Southland Volkswagen were the same outfit. I think the name changed when they moved to Brainerd Rd in 1964. I have some "We Kept It Clean" throw away paper floor mats from Southland Motors on South Broad and Southland Volkswagen on Brainerd Rd.
There were several " Gray Market "  dealers in Chattanooga . I remember that all of these were used car lots.   We called the cars "Virgin Island" specials because some of them did not have heater boxes, some with no chrome, No safety glass in any of them( catch a pebble in the windshield and it was in your lap). These cars were purchased new from different dealers mostly from Germany and brought into the U.S. via the Virgin Islands and sold as used cars. These cars had about 30-40 miles on the clock. These cars were supposed to stay in the Islands or South and Central America.

I don't know about a Reliable motors in Hixson. When Southland was sold it was renamed Reliable Motors on Brainerd Rd. Later renamed Tri-State VW , then Village Volkswagen.

I'm probably confused as usual. Maybe the car just had the original dealer stuff on it. It was bought used.

The earliest referance I can find for Southland Motors is they are listed as an official VW dealer in VW's April 1957 dealership publication (according to The Samba).  This is the earliest DATED dealership list I've found.  There is one earlier list posted on The Samba, but it isn't dated.  There is NO CHATTANOOGA DEALER listed in it.  The 1958 Chattanooga City Directory list Southland Motors under Car Dealerships, but it just gives the address on Broad Street . . . it doesn't associate it with any particular brand or state if it sold new or used cars.

I haven't talked to Conley personally (at least not since I bought a new 1981 Chevy Chevette from him 28 years ago).  A lady I work with is married to a second cousin of Conley . . . she bought a Malibu from him in the late 90's and told me about seeing the picture the next day.  She said she asked Conley why he had a picture of VWs on his office wall and he said that was him and ???? standing in front of the first load of VWs ever shipped to Chattanooga.  A couple of months ago, I was talking to Kyle about the picture (which I still hadn't seen).  Kyle said something about it to Ted Jones (of the Stevenson Bug Blast).  Ted told me at the show that he had seen the picture before and asked Conley about it . . . and got the same story.  A few days ago, Ted went by and asked Conley if he could take the picture and copy it and, obviously, Conley let him.

My best guess is that Southland aquired the VW franchise in early 1957 and took delivery of their first load of Beetles after the 1958 models came out.  The first opportunity I get, I'll go to Stevenson and talk to Conley personally and document everything he can tell me about the picture . . . and anything related to VW's in Chattanooga and/or Southland.

Speaking of used car dealers selling nearly new Beetles, I met one of those guys a few months ago.  I can't remember his name, but he has a used car lot out on Lakeview Drive.  I can't remember where he said his lot used to be, but he said in the late 50's and early 60's, he bought Beetles from the dealer and resold them at his lot.  I was helping my daughter shop for a car and stopped to look at a Jeep Cherokee he had for sale . . . After looking it over, we quickly decided it wasn't what she was looking for, but we were there for a couple of hours just shootting the breeze.  He also used to own a parts store . . . He had a LOT of old parts in the building . . . I asked if he had any old VW parts and he said he problaby did somewhere . . . that's what got the two hour conversation started.

I tried to call Danny but no cigar. I left him a message.
Zen , That list of dealers brought back a lot of memory"s .   Rice became Rice Bros. and were a Fiat dealer. Broad St. Garage use to be the Packard dealer before Packard went belly up. My Dad bought his '50 Packard there.
