I found a really cool pic of a Beetle in a work of art. I saved it to my computer, along with the blurb that accompanied it. Is it against some sort of copyright law to post it here? I'd love to share it.
My theory is that it is SOMETIMES better to ask for forgiveness that it is to ask for permission. I'm not a lawyer and this can be a complicated subject. Here's what I "think" . . .
If the place you got it from had a statement about the contents of the site (or book) being copyrighted, then yes, it probably is a copyright violation. But, if it came from another web site, who's to say the artwork actually belongs to them? If it is made available to the public without any kind of copyright or "property of" or "not to be duplicated or redistributed" type statements, it may still be copyrighted material. If you weren't trying to make a profit and had no malicious intent, PROBABLY the worst that would happen would be you would have to remove it if and when the rightful owner asked you to. If you didn't, it could get ugly from there.
Again, that's my opinion. A lawyer can give you better advice, but it'll cost you.
