The content for the homepage is generated once every 30 minutes, and indeed it did look like there was a problem with the RSS feeds.
I've attempted to prevent something like this from happening again, by checking the filesize of the cached content to make sure it's not empty (0 bytes) and if so, load an older copy. It means the content on the front may not be as fresh, but it's better than not being there at all.
