Adding the URL to an Events Post

« on: September 15, 2004, 07:28:41 AM »
FYI:

If you are going to add a URL (web address of a link) to your post, either use the full address OR the URL open and close tags . . . NOT BOTH.  When I put the open and close tags around an address starting with http://www . . . in the events section the link included the closing tag as part of the address.  I went back and took the tags out and the link works fine in both the forums and the events page of our web site.

That's correct. It's because I have written the Events section of the website to pull directly out of the MySQL database and some of the special phpBB posting functions don't work.

I have written a function that automatically makes a link out of a URL, so it's usually best if you need to link to another site in an events post, just type out the URL and the site will take care of the rest.

I usually keep an eye on it and do a few "edits" here and there to keep everything smooth, but keep in mind as you add events that they'll be on our event calendar as well...so try to keep your post concise and to the point. If you want to discuss the event in detail, reply to the original post below and start discussing there.

Thanks for noting this, Zen!

Thanks, it's really better that it's a community-driven website, rather than everyone depending on one person for updates. I get bogged down sometimes, so it's good that way.

Also if you notice on the front page we have the latest handful of new forum posts there, as well as the most recent gallery update. So, everyone keep contributing in the forums, gallery, links, and events sections and our site will never become "stale".

Well, I changed the way the URLs work in the Events page, sortof. If you just type an address it won't auto-create the link anymore. I ran into problems if someone used the BBCode instead. So, if you want to create a link and have it clickable on the events page, use the correct BBCode like this:

[ url ]http ://www.volksfolks.org[ /url ]
or
[ url=http ://www.volksfolks.org]Volks Folks[ /url ]

Without the spaces of course, they are there for the example. Please try not to link to any images in your event post, they get messed up on the events page for some reason. If you have pictures you want to share, just reply to your original post and put them there.

Also try to keep your post short - include just the info relevant to the event: time, info, links, etc. If you want to discuss the event, again just reply to your post in the thread and start there. You don't have to include the date in the subject line either, just pick the date below when you post. Don't feel bad if I edit your post a little, sometimes I have to in order to get the events page to work right.
