Herbie

« on: May 05, 2010, 10:07:43 PM »
Have you ever seen a "REAL" Herbie?  Not a replica like Feildings, I'm talking 'bout a bug that actually had a scene in one of the Disney movies.  Mid-America Motorworks owns two or three.  They brought the shaking Herbie from "Herbie Goes Bannanas" to Bug-A-Paluza one year.  If you've ever been to their FunFest in Effingham, IL, you probably saw the Spinning Herbie from bullfight scene in "Bannanas" and street racer Herbie from "Fully Loaded."

Well, get ready to see another one.  I have it from a good source that a real movie Herbie will soon be at his new home near Chattanooga.   :o  This one will make you flip when you see it.  ;)    That's all I got to say 'bout that.  8)

It's a done deal!  I got a voice message this afternoon informing me that the Demolition Derby Herbie from "Herbie Fully Loaded" is now residing in Ringgold, GA!  I can't wait to see it in action.

Disney used more than one Herbie for the scene, so the one in the press release photo below may or may not be the one living in Ringgold now, but it's the only one that performs it's particular trick that still exist in it's original movie form.   8)

Yes, the rumors are true! One of the 2 stunt Herbies from the demolition derby scenes of Herbie Fully Loaded is now living in my garage. He actually is the only one left that still is exactly as it was in the movie. His twin was purchased by a man who thought he could make some money by cleaning him up to resale. Little did he realize that cleaning it up and taking off the dirt paint and bullseyes took away from its value. The 2 stunt Herbies built were called Ole' Herbies #23, which is mine, and #32 his mirror twin that was cleaned up. The car has a pnuematic air driven arm with a wheel attached that when a toggle is flipped on the dash the arm comes down and lifts the car up and drives on two wheels. Mine lifts up to the right and #32 lifted to the left. The Herbie in the picture that Zen put up was destroyed in the first scene of the derby when it was crushed in a front shot. #23 runs and is functional, trick wise... I just have to find a placed that can fill up the air tank that charges to 1000psi, it take 675psi to operate the arm...but I will get it. Pictures soon to come, just wanted to update that the rumors are not rumors anymore.

There are pictures of Herbie floating around out there in cyberspace somewhere . . . Fielding has been trying to send them to me to resize for him but I haven't gotten them.  I tried to email him to be sure he had my address right, but my emails to him have bounced.  ? ? ?   Fielding, my address is zenph@comcast.net
