Powder Coating

« on: October 31, 2011, 12:18:47 AM »
So... I have finally made it all come together!!! About 5 years ago, my father came across the Harbor Freight powdering coating machine on sale and snatched one up. We rushed it home and read through it... only to find out that it says "WARNING: CURING POWDER COATINGS IN A CONVENTIONAL OVEN CAN CONTAMINATE FOOD!!!" Well, we thought about switching one of mom's double oven's to shop use, but we ended up just boxing it back up and shelving it.

A little over 2 years ago, I bought a house. It was a forclosure and had extensive damage. I ended up renovating extensively and moved the kitchen, converted the range to natural gas and a bunch of other stuff. Luckily, they used to have electric heat and had recently switched to natural gas furnace- freeing up about 100amps of service. I ran a 6/3 wire to a garage subpanel and added a welder plug for 240 welder. I also kept the old oven in the corner of the garage to hold that end down.

A little over 2 weeks ago, I realized I had all the parts. I only needed to make the wiring for the stove work for the welder plug. I pieced together the wire (male welder plug, enough extra 6/3 wire to get to out the garage door to the driveway, and a regular oven 30 amp female oven receptacle). I also put some cheap HF caster wheels on the oven to move it around.

I got to playing with it last Friday... and.... ITS FREAKING AWESOME!!!

Check this out:

Those were in similar condition and I wire wheeled one and then hit it with the powder and carefully slid it into the oven for 15 minutes. I let it cool for 5 and it was ready to use. I am absolutely blown away.

I am so excited about the possibilities!!!

Oh yeah, the instructions specifically say, "Discharge the gun's electrode on the grounding clip prior to touching it"

They are right; it will get you!

Nice!
I had been entertaining the idea of an old dishwasher for cleaning the engine parts prior to reassembly, but that is awesome!
Good thoughts!

Way to go Dude. Be careful who you tell or people will be all over your yard unless you want it that way. You could make enough money to buy a bigger Backhoe ;D ;D

Dishwashers don't do that great of a job cleaning engine blocks in my opinion. I tried that when I rebuilt Bonnie's engine and it didn't come all that clean. Plus the dishwasher now has a grease ring around the back side of it ::)

If it had worked, I would have kept the two I had in the garage, but would have had to figure out hot water to the garage as well...

Heck yeah. When we remodelled the kitchen a few years back we put all the appliances in the garage. The only problem is now I want to powdercoat bigger parts and haven't had the time to build a new oven.  ;D
