my little boat

« on: July 31, 2011, 03:01:20 AM »
So I picked this thing up about 2 years ago while I was still working on the house. It was a really great deal and I had been researching building something like a mini-max(old pop-mech. design) or something. It has been sitting in my garage waiting for me to get a free moment. Well, when Megan and I went to Disney, I picked up some paint from West Marine and when I got back, I flipped the boat and sanded/painted the bottom. I just got it back right side up tonight and put a coat of spar varnish on it. I'm not sure how varnish will do on fiberglass, but the metal flake was getting really rough (like 60-100 grit) and I didn't want to put epoxy on since its non-UV protected. I found the varnish for $.50/pint and decided, what the heck. It turned out really nicely and I plan on getting a motor and an interior in it pretty soon.

Tiny thing. Anyone ride the water mouse boats at Disney???

Simple little boat

Rough finish (you can kinda see the metal flake)

And After:

New blue bottom

turning slowly

Turned over- you can see the old dull finish

oooohhhhhh shiney!!!!

Not a good match. I might have to repaint it a better color in a few years.

New bunks

Type of vinyl I want to cover the seat with:

What size engine did this little booger have ?   Were this boats a rental for the lake at  Disney World ?  Seems that I saw something like that at Disney.

I tried to find a photo from when I rented a Sea Racer at Disney. The used to have the "Water Mouse" boat with a 9.9hp on the back. Since then, they have updated the fleet to Sea Ray "Sea Racers" with 9.9hp on them as well.

I don't know what brand mine is and I'm not sure what mine had on it at one time, but whatever it is can't be very heavy! I am looking at putting an older 35hp 2 stroke evinrude on it. The transom needs some work (the top and bottom have split around the transom) so I have some 1/4" plate that I'm going to use to reinforce it and build it up to accept a 20" shaft outboard (the transom is currently 16" high).

I've seen a lot of addictor information on the internet. Seems like that was the biggest brand of little boats. I don't know what my no name is, but I like its look. The addictors looked a little too stubby for my taste.

They all kinda remind me of the little boats at the traveling amusement parks that go around and float in a circle. The ones with a bell that the kids can ring. I think Lake Winnepesaukah used to have them.

The dinghy is a couple feet longer!

I built a wooden row boat a few years back. I guess I could tow it behind my speedboat and use it to go to shore!

PUNNY!!!

I've heard of people putting 9.9hp- 40 or 50hp motors on these little boats. I was looking in the 25-35hp range because its hard to find a 15hp with controls locally. Most all small outboards are tiller steer. I don't have to use all the horse power and with my luck, half of those horses would be lame anyway. I rented a little boat at disney 2 years ago shortly after I picked this one up and the 9.9 seemed way under powered. It wanted to go faster, but it could never get up on plane. I want more than that, especially if I'm going to be around other boats (that aren't underpowered tiny boats- like at Disney).

I guess you could do that after all the ELCO built PT boat of WW-2 had 3 Packard V-12's gas marine engines, 1500 HP each stuck in a 100'  3/4" marine plywood hull.  I have had up close and personal business with those big jewels when I was a Motor- Machinist Mate  in the Navy. And yes Nick, that was after sail driven vessels "of the line" were long gone. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Well ,  I really did serve on a sailing vessel. It was my big ole '50 Packard Sedan. A rather large inline 8 cyl. engine ,  3 speed/ O.D.  about 120mph top end, 12mpg .  What a ride !!

That boat actually looks like one of the water sprites I used to ride at disney before they switched to the pointed-nose "mouse boats". The older water sprites had a removable 2 gallon tank and they handled better than the newer models with the built in 8 gallon tank. Too many accidents occured with the mouse boats... the water sprites were much safer...

Here are some water sprites in action: http://webspace.webring.com/people/tu/um_11233/jeremyboat.jpg
