How to run a car with out altenator

« on: May 23, 2012, 07:07:27 PM »
I'm going to try running my volvo with no  altenator.  Just charge the battery with a solar panel and with a charger at home.   I'm trying to figure out how to disable the altenator with out ruining it.   Would pulling the fuse disable the altenator with out ruining it>

Just unhook it from the large wire at both ends,, or take it off and find a shorter belt,  gonna be hard to drive at night for very long

And you better put a deep cycle battery in it.  Your normal car battery won't last long without a constant charging system.

And IF that's the case, do what Travis said about using a shorter belt.  Even if it's not running, it still takes a little HP to spin it.  And if you take it off and leave it at home, it'll lighten the load.

If it's a straight shift, you can remove the starter and just always park on a hill.  Less drain on the battery and it lightens the load even more!

Heck, just take the altenator off.
What does that baby weigh? like 20 lbs?
That's gotta be worth .05 miles / gallon!
Do like a guy did at work on his electric car he made (beetle by the way), buy one of those harbor freight mini generators and get a battery charger, when the battery dies, just pull over and fire up the genny for a little while, then bamo your good to go!
Oh wait, isn't that what an alternator is for?
LOL,
KC

the Ecomodders  say they get 10% increase in mpg.  Its the number one thing to do that the the KWs from you engine are very expensive while the grid is pennies a night to charge up.  Some sites says 10 hp to turn Alt when its charging.  Power steering uses alot to

Hell Fire!!  Just take the whole power train out and put a solar panel on your Butt  for your miners cap light and drag the the poor thing behind a bicycle . You will not burn any gas and the same time you get a great workout. Don't forget to stop by the HOME to tell the attendants (the ones dressed in white) what you are up to ::) ::)

A long time ago when I had my bus, the generator brushes crapped out when I was nowhere near a place that had replacement brushes.  I stopped at a parts store and bought a new battery and managed to drive the rest of the way home on just the battery.  However, the only electrical load on the battery was the ignition system which didn't take much power to run.

The problem I see with this is the car you're using for this experiment.  You've got a lot of electrical draw on the car that you can't eliminate and still have it run including the fuel pump, the engine control module and the transmission control module just to name a few. Before you try this experiment on public roads you need to see how long the car will run on just the battery. Disconnect the exciter wire from the alternator and start the car.  Let it idle and time how long it'll run just sitting there. My bet is that it'll go 15-20 minutes before the electronics start to fail due to low voltage.

I would think that the tow bill from having it die on you somewhere unexpected will offset the money from any fuel savings.

Now if you could figure out a way to install a windmill and run the alternator that way while driving....

Stuff like 4 good tires,  a tune up and fresh oil will do wonders on fuel milage, just start removing unnecessary parts like radios,  carpet and trim

Or just buy a car that doesn't have a b230f in it.
