I've been driving this old S10 for several years without air conditioning 'cause I figured it would cost $500 or more to get it going. I priced the parts at O'Rielly's the other day when it was over 100 degrees. Everything to do the job (except charging it) was $181 including the sales tax and $10 core charge on the compressor. And it didn't take that long to change the parts out.
I'll get it charged tomorrow after work . . . even if that's 100 bucks, it'll be less than $300. I can't beleive I've spent 4 or 5 summers driving this thing with no air 'cause I was too cheap to spend a few dollars.
