. . . (or see if you can override the key switch and drive with the starter motor!  :o )

I've done that many times in Homer . . . well, sort of.  I didn't overide the key switch, I just put the tranny in 1st and held the key in the start position.  I've used that trick to get off to the side of the road, to pull in the driveway and to pull the last few yards up to the gas pump when I didn't quite have enough gas in the tank to get to where I was going.  That trick needs more than one battery to get you very far down the road though.  And if you think a 1600 powered bus is slow, you won't be happy with the top speed you can get from the starter.  I found that fixing my gas gauge and odometer was a better solution . . .  8)
I'm always amazed how fixing things in the first place solves most problems and I can spend the rest of the time enjoying myself.
Zen, Rumor has it that you could open a store that sold nothing but one gallon gas cans. Could this be true ?  ;D ;D

Three or Four years ago I could have.  Now they are all dirty and dusty and a lot of them have gotten crushed under the weight of the junk (mostly more gas cans) on top of them.  If I'm not mistaken, it's been over 2 years since I bought my last one.

There was a time I was so bad about running out of gas in Homer that the HR Manager (at the time, my boss's boss) gave me a 2 1/2 gallon gas can (full of gas of course) for my birthday.  I told him I didn't need it, that I had fixed my odometer and hadn't run out of gas in 6 months.  I ran out on the way home that evening.   ::)

I never really "fixed" Homer's gas gauge.  I put one out of an earleir bus in it, but the senders and gauges changed in the early 70s.  I have a newer sender with an older gauge.  But, what it does is go to "Full and a Quarter" when you put gas in it.  At about a half tank, the needle starts bouncing like crazy.  When there's about 2 gallons left, the needle drops out of sight . . . time to get gas.  Haven't ran out since!

Okay, the logic behind getting better mileage from turning off accessories has always seemed faulty to me. I understand the above math about amps equaling horsepower, but my argument is that the alternator is spinning already and unless I'm mistaken, it doesn't put a larger load on the engine when the voltage regulator tells it to send the battery some juice, unlike A/C compressors. So how are you going to make a difference in mileage if there's no difference in load on the engine? I remember watching Jeremy Clarkson freezing and being bored in the (Audi diesel?) he was trying to use to get to Scotland and back in one tank because he refused to turn the heat or radio!

Do alternators have clutches, like an A/C compressor, that allow them to free spin the pulley without turning the guts?

Perhaps SC can morph the compressor clutch with an alternator if they don't!!!
