And Yet ANOTHER Singer Project

« on: July 10, 2013, 10:53:42 PM »
I've got enough projects going to keep me busy until 2099, but I couldn't help myself . . . I've added yet ANOTHER Singer to my collection.  It's a 1920s leather stitching machine that seems to be complete, but it's locked up from sitting and rusting.  It should be easy to free it up and get it working again.  The cast iron treadle base will be easy.  A few minutes with a wire brush, a coat of Rustolium rust converter primer and a can or two of gloss black and it will look like new.  I bought it from a scrap yard in Cleveland . . . one of the ladies that works there had the good sense to pull it out of the scrap heap and put it on Craigslist.  She had done a little research on it and knew what they go for when referbished, but still priced it very reasonable for it's condition.

A half a can of Liquid Wrench and a couple of paper towels later and it spins free and everything seems to move like it should.  ;D   8)   Why don't we build stuff like this anymore?   ???

I have a couple of parts I need to replace to fine tune it, but it sewed its first stitched in many, many years today!  Now for some cosmetic work . . .  8)

I was going to leave the machine as it was, but I found a source for decals, so I decided to paint it too.  I've got a little more touch up on the machine and it'll be ready for the decals and clear coat . . . but other than that, it's ready to sew!

This one is DONE!  I built a draw for it that uses the original drawer slides that were still attached, and I added some reproduction decals.  The decal set didn't include three pieces of the original scroll work, but the rest are pretty accurate to the original.  There are a couple of other things I could do to it, but I'll leave them up to the next owner.  I've got other projects to get moving on (including getting Homer the Superbus back on the road).

KC, it sews great!  But I'm not quite ready to sell it yet.  I'm still trying to figure out what I should ask for it.  I would love to keep it, but I kind'a promised Joy that I was buying to fix up and sell.  I just didn't promise how quick!   ;D  As for what it needs:

I haven't painted the arm for the bobbin winder and I primed, but didn't paint the "wax cup."  I haven't sprayed clear coat over the decals to protect them.  I'll probably take care of those this weekend (if it doesn't rain).

It needs a new clip/spring/thread guide in the wax cup.  There was a magnet with a notch in it sitting in the cup when I got it, I guess it would work as good as the clip.  The part that holds the thread down is there, but the clip on the outside of it is broken off.  I don't know what kind of wax you are supposed to use, but it is for lubricating the thread when sewing leather.  The

It could use a new set of thread tension plates . . . the top one has some notches broken out of the edge and they are pretty pitted, but as long as you keep the notches turned towards the back it doesn't snag the thread.

It doesn't have a handle on the handwheel . . . I have been looking for one on ebay, but I've about decided it would be easier to make one.  It doesn't "have" to have one, but if you are doing slow precision work, it would make it easier than trying to use the treadle or turning the handwheel by hand.

I haven't really determined exactly what model it is.  I "think" it's a 29-4.  Maybe a 29K-something.  I've seen a few brass model plates and rivits on eBay for them, but I didn't want to put the wrong plate on it.  It doesn't really need one, but IF I kept it long enough, I would like to add one back to it.
