Im about to start on my first real car project my dad has been a VW fan for as long as i can remember and we have owned several bugs fastbacks and golfs in the past but this one is going to be mine and last year at the Apr 17th VW show i saw some rat rods and hot rods and it looked like a good semi cheap beginner project any words of wisdom or advise here for a young aspiring VW fan

Make sure the transmission is good.  Everything else can fixed pretty easy and cheap.   The pancake motors are more expenseve to fix.like on . fastbacks.   Make sure you ratrod a newer 70's bug.  It makes folks sad when you rip up a stock 60 vw.  Cheers.  SC
