Yorque wrench setting s for spark plugs

« on: March 10, 2006, 03:38:43 AM »
When the Bentley manual says to torque the spark plugs in the Type IV heads to 22 ft. lbs., do they really mean 22 ft. lbs.?  I didn't like the feel I was getting before the torque wrench even measured 15 ft. lbs.

Travis, I don't think I would go 22lbs on the plugs. Thats about the torque on the cly.head nuts themselves. I don't recall the torque settings in the factory manual, but I think 22 lbs is on the heavy side. I'm not trying to be a smart ass here, but I can't remember when I last used a torque wrench on spark plugs much less  talking about plug torques, even in VW schools. I could be wrong. I would use my own judgement here. Bently manuals are very good, but I have found a few errors compared to the original factory manuals.
Maybe someone can help us out here. I might be "leading us down the garden path" but I can be corrected if need be.

The plugs are one of the few things I don't use a torque wrench on. Personally, I just make sure they are good and snug. I don't "wrench" them down. Remember, you are putting steel into aluminum. The Godfather may disagree but I also ALWAYS put anti-seize on my plugs.

I don't use a torque wrench on them normally, I just wanted to feel if I thought that 22 lbs. was too much.  I felt that it was and didn't go there.

Anti seize...I got that.

Also, it was really late last night when I posted...you can tell by the title of my post.

I have never used anti-seize on a VW plug. If you replace your plugs when you are suppose to and use Bosch and not over-tighten they should come out find.  If you use another brand of plug, they will get stuck more often. Look real close at the tip of the thread of a AC , Champion compared to a Bosch. They are all 14mm ,but a slight difference. A trick I use to use was if a plug was stuck, run her down the road to get her hot then try to remove the stuck plug before she cooled off. Worked about 90% of the time with no thread damage. Belive me when tell you I have seen anti-seize about weld a plug in. I put Anti-Seize and RTV on the same plane. They are great used in the right places. Its your coal truck.
