wt of oil

« on: January 14, 2011, 02:00:07 PM »
What multi-weight do you use?  10-40 15-40  20-50?
Tried searching, but seen only on topic where a straight 30wt was used. Want to change oil this weekend and wasn't sure how heavy or light to go with the air cooled engine.  I was thinking due to winter maybe a 15-40.  then summer maybe a 20-50
thanks
ron

Searched with oil and didn't find but just one subject. Went back and searched again with the word "Castrol" and several topics popped up. Looks like the engine likes a 20w50?

thanks

I used 30 wt. for years with no real problems until I started up my Beetle one day at work when it was about 5 degrees and pulled on to Hwy. 27 about 10 seconds later.  I blew out two quarts of oil in the 13 miles between work and home.  When I stopped to add oil, it took forever.  At near 0, 30 wt flows about like peanut butter!  After the weather warmed up, I cleaned all the oil off the engine and tried to find the leak, figuring it was the oil cooler . . . but there were no leaks.  Ever since then I've been taking David's advice and running 20-50.
