Wow..better check everything..reman engine

« on: April 03, 2011, 11:07:35 PM »
Well I have a engine here that came from a Very large vender and looked it over pretty well before starting the assembly...but I guess I didn't look it over good enough. :( This is a type 4(I know,I know probably should have been the first thing looked at. :D) got all the tin on and installed the engine in the bus, then went to install the exhaust and found this.... :P

Now I know this may not look like a major problem to some people BUT now I'm stuck until I get the go ahead from the owner or the reman company to try and clean this up good enough to seal.  Not gonna be the easiest thing to do. :-\  For those that can't tell, the valve seat had been replaced and the head had been welded through the port to fix damage.  The inside of the port is nice and dressed up but the exhaust port sealing surface still has a good sized weld bead where a machined surface should be. ??? ???

just dont say a GEX type 4.... since thats what I'm running... lol

Only issue I have had with mine was it pulled out an exhaust stud out the first time I tightened the exhaust on to the head. (and no, I wasnt over tightening it)

Yup...But I'm not gonna say the engine company name because it really is just a oversight, and I'm not here to bash anyone....yet. ;D  We will see what they want to do about it and just go from there.  I just wanted to push the importance of looking everything over before you start working on something cause you do get punished for what you can't imagine could happen! ::)

^^^^ A VERY valid point.  Stuff happens, I don't care who the company is.

Does stink, though.   :(

mine still leaks exhaust (#3 cylinder)...but then its my own fault... havent put the oversized stud in the head yet... yea I know thats not good to only hold it on with one stud..... but I'm not sure about my ability to redo it. I might let Rick give it a shot one of these days... not sure what a job like that would run me time wise...

I'll say it:  GEX  They seem to have more problems than any one even on Type -1's.  I have seen it time after time with GEX.

Well, it's not GEX...If it was I probably would have just said it in the first post as almost everyone has the low down on them already. ;)  This is a big company that has a pretty good name in the business, although they don't seem to be too worried about this...pretty much told the owner that they don't see a problem with the port in the picture :o. Oh well, I'll just end up shaving it down a little at a time until it's as close as I can get it then bolt it all together.  I think the big picture here is that this is a warranty engine and they feel that they have done all that was required for this situation although the average hobbiest would not be able to finish this install without major problems.

Come on Rick. With an attitude like that company has , People need to know so
they can see what they might run into if they do business with them. PM me and let me know. I'll stick it on the forum because I don't have a shop they can mess with, not that they could. Been through all of this crap before. >:( >:(  GEX is not the only business that builds JUNK.
