wont idle

« on: May 17, 2013, 10:21:17 PM »
ok, once my 1600dp heats up, new 34 carb, it will not idle unless you feather the throttle. once it goes dead it hard to start back up.
Is there someone in the Dalton area that could come to my home/shop and check it out, or I could bring it to you. let me know.
ask any questions that you have and I will answer them.

Have you tried the idle cut off switch? The electronic connection on the carb- not the choke. Turn the key on, pull the wire off and tap it on the connector you just pulled it off of. It should click 10 out of 10 times. If it doesn't, the part is failing and WILL cause your engine to not idle. Replace if defective.

Otherwise, adjust it according to the manuals and good luck. My 34 didn't care how far you turned the screws, it wouldn't idle. I put a 30 on it with an adapter plate and never looked back.

When I bought the car it did not have one, just a brass plug. I took one from another carb I have only to realize that the tip had been clipped off. So from what I understand is that when power is applied to the switch it draws the plunger/tip toward the power connections? And if its bad I hear no click, or if the tip has been clipped I hear no click. The click is the tip sealin off or closing a fuel source?
BTW the screw on the right is clean and the filter is new.

AH! The never ending story.  About 20 years ago before VW mech. learned to deal with the "34" idle/hesitation -V- 009 dist. and "fuel shut-off" valves going bad at a cost of $35-$40 's, we use to clip the plunger off. This would fix the idle problem but not the hesitation problem. We use to spend/waste a lot of time before we found out that a 34 was not compatible with a 009 dist. You have to remember there wasn't a conversion kit to a 30 at that time.
As Nick stated he installed a 30 carb/adapter on his car and the problem went away with very little if any loss of performance. This works just about 100% of the time from my experience and is a now common "fix". I would also replace the "fuel shut valve" just to keep the engine from "Dieseling" when you turn it off. ( not good for crankshafts)
Indixon, Your 34 should idle with the "fuel shut-off" clipped off so I think you are looking at other things like common adjustments , vac. leaks, ing. timing etc etc. If your 34 hesitates and you are running a 009 dist., give up and put the 30 conversion kit on and be done with it and enjoy driving your car for a change.

ok from what I understand is that the 34 works best with a vac distributor, I do have a 009 on the car. So the 34 lacks vaccum at an idle. Not the choke butterfly but the lower one, I have read that if you solider that hole up it would give you back that missing vaccum?? adjust the time a little and it should ok. any wisdom, thoughts on this.

I have read of at least 100 different ways to make a 34 carb/009 distributor combination work.  I've tried 'em all.  I'm not saying it "can't" be done . . . but a couple of years and many, many asprin later, I gave up and bought a 30 carb and adaptor.  Every since then, if I have gotten a VW with this combination, I've chunked the 34 and bought a 30.  And I'm cheap.  I HATE spending money on good parts if I can get a piece of junk to do the job.

Me also. Sometimes they worked, most of the time they didn't. I had a repair shop and was trying to make a living. I did't have the time to fool around for hours trying to make something work. If the owner wants to drive himself crazy with home remedies , by all means "have at it". You might luck out. Meanwhile I'll just drive around in a smooth running car while the other poor soul enjoys "missing, splutting, stalling, coughing" his   way to the store and maybe back home.

I haven't bought a new one lately, but the ones I've bought in the past were "Brosol" made in Brazil.  The only problem I had with them is nothing was tight from the factory.  Snug down all the screws and the idle cut off before you install it.  And if it ever backfires through the carb with the air cleaner on it, it will probably blow the plug out of the front.  If it does, put it back in, stake it down, and cover it with epoxy.  If you can't find the plug, expoxy a dime over the hole.

The Brosol with adapter seems to be the common brand. As Zen stated , check the screws etc. for tightness.
