Wire question.....

« on: May 27, 2008, 01:43:47 AM »
I need to know what guage of wire i would need to use if i needed to replace the single wires that would run from say the speedometer gauge lights to the fuse panel or the ones from a relay to the fuse panel or even the grounds. I have a few that are looking a little ragged. And if i can get them in the same colors that would be good also.........Rob

I usually use 14 gage wire for most applications on old VWs.  The ignition wire, headlight circuits and maybe one or two other items need something that will handle a little more current.  The best way to stay safe is compair your replacement to the original . . . It's OK if the new wire is a little bigger than the old wire . . . but don't go to smaller wire.

And on colors, keep them as close to the original wire colors as possible.  You buy a spool of red automotive wire and rewire the entire car.  It will work . . . electrons could care less what color the insulation is.  But somewhere down the road it WILL have an electrical problem and trust me, you don't want to troubleshoot an electrical system where all the wires are the same color!

Thanks Zen i have a couple that are " fixed " right now till i could get them done correctly. As for keeping the correct color i will definately get as close as i can.  The red and brown solid colors will be easy to replace but the grey with the red stripe etc will be harder to find. But thanks again for the info on the guage to use. I know what i will be doing this weekend if it does not rain. Of course it all works now so i may have to wait till something breaks again..................

If you need a wiring diagram, check out http://www.type2.com - Click on the "Library" link on the left side of the page, then on "Electrical (Primary)" at the top of the next page and find the diagram you need.  These are original diagrams scanned from old manuals and they are in color (colors match the original wiring) . . . most of the new manuals have the diagrams in black and white.

Thanks for the additional info on napa and the wiring diagrams. However the wires that i am going to fix are those that are about maybe 8 to 10 inches long under the front hood. All i should have to do is take the one wire off and put new ends on the new wire and put it back on. I do not plan on taking off more than one at a time as i find them frayed or broken. My memory is not what it used to be so i take things a little at a time...... :D
