Windshields

« on: November 04, 2004, 03:29:28 PM »
Posted a while back about replacing the rubber & trim in the windshields in my 70 bug. I couldn't get it, one local glass place couldn't, had one mobile glass place with two different guys give up, got at another local glass place now who said they would, but it's been there for a almost two weeks.
If they don't get it done by tommorow and windows re-installed, is there anyone up there I could pay to put them together  and install or I'll try to install the windows myself?  I called Harrell's down in Carrollton, they'll swap my rubber & trim for the Cal rubber, really don't want that, but this is getting ridiculous.
Thanks
Ron

Hi Ron, I just can`t imagine that someone down there cannot install glass in a Bug. People around here do it all the time. Some of the club members even do it themselves. If you want the chrome trim installed, you have to install the trim in the seal before you put the seal around the glass. Its almost impossible to install the trim after the fact.  The trick is to keep the trim in place while you install the rubber seal around the glass.
Is your seal a good quality one ? Is it the correct one ? It also helps to do the job on a warm day so the seal will be easier to deal with. I have seen people put a windshield in faster than I can explane the job.
Maybe you need to bring your Varment up here. Im truly suprised.
What explanation do they have not being able to do the job? I would really like to know.

I remember you saying that. The rubber is by West Coast Metrics and is proper.  One glass place, it seemed the problem is trying to put the chrome trim in( don't think he had the experience of doing a bug), the mobile guys, not sure, some of it the same problem and didn't want to take the time. The glass place now just seems to keep putting on the back burner, not sure why, but they explained just as you did & sounds like they know what their doing.
Can't bring the bug up, I already have the windows out. Once we get the windows back in, it gets painted. All lights, turn signals, etc is off the bug. I've been carrying the glass to the glass places. No one seems to want to touch it unless it's the Cal look stuff, then maybe I could even do it.

Well, Good luck on the last place. We will be here if you need us.
Why don`t you paint the car while the glass is out ?  I have done a few this way and it gets paint behind the rubber also save a lot of time and effort trying to clean overspray off the rubber which always seems to find its way there no matter how good you tape it off.

If you can bring the windshield, rubber and trim to LaFayette sometime this weekend, I'll be happy to help you get it ready to install.  If you can tow the bug up here, we'll even put it in . . . I'll bring my good digital camera from work and we'll make some "how to" (or maybe "how not to") pictures to post on the web site.

 :thumbs-up:

Backing up to the Godfather, Ron. I think you would be FAR better off getting the car painted BEFORE you put the windows in. It might save you some money in taping and I know it will look better because of the overspray. I don't care how good a body shop claims to be, they won't get it taped perfectly and there is still the issue of NOT having paint under the rubber. Something you definately want.

If you need to install the windshield now, but you are planning on painting it soon, get a cheap (Brazilian) Cal-Look seal.  They are cheap enough and easy enough to work with to make them expendable.  You can also cut your teeth on one and it'll make the American Style seal a little easier to chew when you install it.

Like David and Herb said, you need the glass out when you paint it.  Not only do you have to deal with the overspay issues, but one day you may need to replace the seal . . . no two seals are created equal.  There's a real good chance that the future seal will not cover as much of the paint as the current seal.

Also, keep in mind that you have to have the glass out of it you install a headliner.  If you are going to paint it and install a headliner, you need to 1) remove the glass; 2) paint it; 3)install the headliner; and THEN 4) install the glass.

The offer for help with the seal still stands.

thanks guys,
We're going to be painting it with a base coat clear, so there will be some wet sanding going on and not wanting to take a chance of water running on the inside. We have already painted around the where the windows go in.
I'll wait and see how the weekend holds out, maybe we'll get lucky. If not maybe I can round up a trailor and bring it up that way.
Thanks again.

Zen,
If the glass company is not through with the windows this evening, can we get together this Saturday or Sundy and try to put the windows together?
Thanks
Ron

I should be at home most of the day Saturday getting Homer the Superbus ready for his 3rd trip to Tampa (mostly, I just gott'a clean out all the stuff that has been in it since last years trip).  I do have to make a trip to Lowes sometime tomorrow, so give me a call tonight or early tomorrow and let me know what time you think you'll come up.  You have my cell phone # don't you?

Sunday . . . it would have to be real early or I'll have to face the wrath of our fearless leader!
