Wierd symptom...1972 AS bug.

« on: May 31, 2008, 01:00:04 AM »
I belive that my spark advance is dying.  It is midnight and that is the only thing I can think of...
I have a some what sporatic 009 symptom of the dead flat spot on a take off, not all the time, but it seams to be getting worse.  The only problem is that I don't have a 009!

I have put 260 miles on the beetle this week.

It stalled today attempting to start out in D2.  Embarassing.  The ground was flat.

I checked the points when I got home and they were tight, something to the tune of .010 or so.... I reset them and it seams to be starting easier now.  I have had ALOT of fun in the car this week, and want to make it my daily-ish car.

It cruised right up to 82 on the old speedo yesterday from Battlefield to the Rockyface Exit in Dalton, (but I'm running 195 60 15's on it so I think it was more like 78.  The engine wasn't straining and the pedal wasn't on the floor.  This was on flat ground.  Up hill was like 5 mph less.

It has not lacked for power, but it hates to start off in high gear.  I know, Start off in D1 then shift, well it did the 1st 200 miles or so in D2 with no problems, that is what I want again... any way, I'll check the distributor advance tommorrow with a pipette ( my mouth..) and see if it moves and holds, if it does, is there any thing else I should try?  I'l check the timming again as well, but I am pretty sure that the dizzy is nice and tight.

I appreciate it.
Have a great weekend and I hope to see you all at the BBQ.
KC

VW says "D-1, D-1, D-1.  After replacing a ton of torque converter seals when the Auto-Stick show up in the U.S.A. VW said to use ALL three forward gears if you lived in "Hilly" country.     If you moved the point gap ,you changed the timing.

I think that the flooding has been getting worse and has now become un usable and I "discovered" these other problems as they were exaserbated by the flooding.
David-
My Check valve WAS working.  Isn't that a shock.

You may have a needle/seat sticking in the top cover of the carb or a piece of "something"  stuck in it.  Take the top off the carb, take the needle/seat out and check.

Test

Ok time for a test, see if you can guess what the cause of my BOCRAP 34pict3 carbie's flooding problem...

a) trash from delaminating varnish from the Gas tank (it did sit for 20 yrs.)

b) dirt and small pieces of stone from the "mud-hut" theory.

c) blown seal on the inlet float valve.

or
d) a non cracked, non leaking float that was 1/2 full of fuel.

(Imagine the Jeopardy theme music.....)

Answers please....

If you guessed "d" you are correct.  Carb was sparkling on the inside with no signs of dirt / varnish.  The strange thing is I cannot get this Hencho en Mexico float to leak.
I assume that under heat and pressure, the glue holding the 2 pieces together is some how allowing the gas to enter the chamber.
Anyone else have this happen to them?

Replaced the H.E.M. float with an old SOLEX plastic hollow float....All the solid foam ones that I found in my friends old carbies were cracked...
-Am I going to have the same problem?
Drove the car this morning and it is still flooding a little, so I am going to pull the top off at lunch and put amother gasket on the inlet valve.  I will probably just put the new one in that I have.

I know that it is flooding a little because at full stop with the car in gear it'll just get slower and slower on the idle untill it just stalls.  Usually this takes about the same time it takes to get through a redlight or a stop sign back up....

I can tell a significant power increase and am interested in getting the idle fixed.
Take car and thanks for the help that I have recieved ofer the past few months.

Well you have just about had somthing very rare to happen.  Are you sure you don't live in the "Triangle" close to S.C. ?
At least you found the problem ON YOUR OWN. Good for you :thumbs-up:

Don't "Live" in the triangle, but it seems sometimes I "live" at work, in Chickamauga, The Burbs of the triangle.
I am parking next to Homer and I think that he is telling my beetle alot of stories and giving him Ideas of what to do next!  I am going to have to park in another place!!!
I can just imagine the conversation:

ASBUG-".....yeah just for kicks I let him think that it was just a bad set of points....I drove fine for 10 miles and then I fried ANOTHER set!!!!!"
Homer-" Is that all that you got?  Try this and see how long it takes him to figure it out..."

After all, Homer is just a beetle at heart, litterally.
Have a great night,
KC

When it rains it pours.
Since I put the nice new non leaking float in, and adjusted the float valve with a new double washer, the back pressure on the pump has caused the internal diaphram to break and now I am leaking gas into the crankcase... not alot, but it thinned the new oil a bit on the way home yesterday.
Back under the shade tree again,
KC
