Sweet Jesus !!!   I'm staying out of this one.  Next thing you will see will be Juan trying to make his Bug leap tall buildings. I wonder if a Super Beetle can  bounce/jump higher than a '64 Impala ?   Hmmmmm

He might need some info on swapping the axles out in the trans for his conversion. As far as super beetles leaping buildings I'm not sure that would be a good idea.

Part of what I've read says I can use my original '73 axles.  I would have to cut the splined snout off of the front of my original drums (about 14 mm long) to use as a spacer in between the drum and axle nut.  I am also trying to find out if the shoe size is the same width both old and new.

seems your on the right path to getting it done. It would take the kind of modifications you mentioned or just swap out the axles and brakes from and earlier car to yours. The cheaper way (and less modification/fabrication )may be to buy a beat up older car and rob the parts off of it.

Do you have an older style (66-67) front and rear drum laying around that I could borrow for mock up?

Got some '67 wide 5 drums (front and rear) from Scott today.  Just took a look at em.  The fronts seem to be the same as my '73 four lug ones.  The outer bearing from my '73 fits the '67 drum great.  I have not tried the inner bearing yet because I didn't feel like pulling the seal at this time.  The wheel cylinders and hardware are the same as well.  As far as the rear, the splines are the same between the '67 and '73.  The measurement from the snout on the front to the rear of the drum is shorter on the '67 than the '73.  This would confirm what I've read about cutting 14 mm off of the snout of the '73 drum to use as a spacer between the snout of the '67 drum and the axle nut.  The wheel cylinders are different, but the hardware is the same.  The only thing at this point that worries me is the backing plate and if the shoes are the same width front and rear.  The drum lip that sits inside the backing plate when installed is the same on both drums.  Once I have finished painting and assembling my current backing plates, I will update incase someone else is interested in doing the same.

Good to hear it's working out so far. I'd definetly like to see the build for the conversion. Seems like good info for sure.
