Why does E brake make my brakes feel better?

« on: November 19, 2007, 10:10:10 PM »
Ok .  Stupies brakes are awful,   I bleed them and bleed them.  I turn the spreaders in the drums.    the pedal goes way to the floor.  When I drive around with  a click or 2 on the E brake.  The pedal is off the floor.  Feels kind of safer

Is it the spreaders or the drum or something else?.  The pads and the Cly are new.  one cly may leak a bit but I think the fluid came out when i pressed the brakes with the  drum off and shot the ends out once.  just for fun. I'm not sure what I was thinking.  sc

You may not be adjusting your brake shoes out far enough.   When you pull your E-brake its sort of ajusting the rear shoes for you.
I adjust my shoes out until they lock the drums, then back them off until they just turn with my hand and you can hear them barely dragging.
Do this with both adjusters one wheel at a time .   DO NOT have your E- brake handle pulled up.
Check that you have some free play between the master cly push rod and the master cly itself. About 1/8 "  You can feel it when you do this with your hand. If you have no free play, you will never have a good full pedal no matter what you do.

Another one for the the King.   Yep. it official.   I don't know what I'm doing.   I kind of tighten  the left spreader then the right  then go to next wheel.    This time I  went back and forth on the each wheel Until I had both of em dragging a bit.  and  got my brake pedal back..  I might stay alive another year  Thanks Bugtech

since my Previa got smashed and my 85 toy van is being bad.  My kids are in my sooberoo and I drive  Stupie every day rain or snow or shine.

Glad it worked.    Really you were doing it right if I understand it.   There are to "star adjusters" per wheel as you know.  As you look at the backing plate   " righty up,  lefty down to tighten "   Were you working on one wheel at a time ?  Thats the way I meant  .  Examble, take the right front wheel, adjust the "righty up" until it locks. back it off until it barely drags,  adjust  "lefty down' back it off until it just drags.  Move to the left front and repeat then go to the rears and do the same thing. What ever the way you did it must have worked but doing them one at a time keeps you from making 10 laps under the car

Spreader =  starwheels brake adjuster ???????

How far does your E-brake handle come up now?   About 7 "clicks" is normal.  You adjust the cables at the handle

Your e-brake is to tight. When you "back" them off you may have to re-adjust your rear brakes a little. I would go about 10 clicks so you would have some room for adjusting on the rear brakes.
