White film-fog around seal on windshield

« on: June 08, 2009, 11:34:59 AM »
I have a white film-fog on my windshield around the seals. I've tried to clean it with about everything but nothing seams to work, any suggestions? I'm assuming the film-fog is due to the age or some reaction with the seal over time.

Thanks

No hope to save that glass.   Old age and moisture sneaks in between the plys in the glass. :(

Several years ago I read something on the now defunked "Volkswagen Archives" forum that you could use a heat gun (like one you use for paint stripping) to clear it up.  They said you had to have the glass removed from the seal then heat it from the clear area towards the edge of the glass.  This was supposed to dry out the mositure and melt the plastic film sticking it back to the layers of glass.  I never tried it, never heard anyone else say anything about trying it.  I doubt it would work, but I've always been a little corious . . . but I don't have a heat gun and I'm too cheap to buy one to try something I don't think will work . . . but again, I'm kind'a curious . . .

Feeb has the same problem. Rick bought me a new windshield for my birthday last year but one thing leads to another and I can't put it in until I start the body work which may be when Hell freezes over

Don't feel bad.  I bought a new windshield for Joy's convertible at Fl Bug Jam.  I haven't been to Bug Jam since it changed to the Pasco Bug Jam . . . and I don't think I bought the windshield at the last one I attended . . . I think it was the next to last one.   :-k  How long ago does that make it?  5 or 6 years at least.

The other day I was in the garage looking for something and said to my self, "Self, what is that curved piece of sheet metal sitting on that old seat in the corner."  "I don't know why don't we look and see?" (Yeah, like you never talk to yourself! )  Anyway, I strolled over and wiped about a half inch of dust off of it and it's a brand new 73 and up Super Beetle Convertible Windshield!  Seems like a waste to put a windshield in a car that doesn't have a floor pan.  Oh, wait, it has one.  It's leaning up against the outside of the garage where it's been for the past couple of years.   8-[  Someday . . . someday . . .

Zen you really need to get that convertible fixed for Joy.  Are you and Lamar seeing how long you can hold out on getting your project cars put back together?
