Wheel positioning problem

« on: February 19, 2005, 12:08:05 PM »
I've finally got hold of some stock spindles to cure the problem I've had with the tyres rubbing on the arches.  It's due to get sorted out on Monday.

However, I've just gone and had a detailed look and noticed something odd.  The only wheel that has ever rubbed is the front passenger wheel.  Now, I've just noticed that the horizontal clearance between the outer side of the tyre and the wheel arch is about 0.5".  However, on the drivers side this clearance is about 1.5".  This is obviously why one wheel rubs but not the other.

Anyone have any ideas how this could happen? The arch itself doesn't seem to be out of shape so could it be a problem with the suspension? The clearance on the rear wheels seems to be the same each side.  If I can cure this then I won't need to go back to stock spindles which may not cure the problem anyway...

I'm late to the party, here.  What size tires and are you using stock wheels?  And this may sound silly, but are both tires the same brand and size?

Never overlook the simple things.

Anthony may be on to something.  To take it a step further, even if the tires are the same size and brand and wheels "appear" to be identical "stock" wheels, one could be a 4.5" and the other a 5.5" or they could have different offsets.  If that's not the problem it sounds to be like something (the beam, a control arm, or maybe even the frame head) is bent.  I'm not an expert, but most of the problems (I guess ALL of the problems) I've ever seen due to bent parts changed the front to back location of the tire in the wheel well, and not so much the side to side location (which is what is sounds like you are saying your problem is).  I'd be looking REAL close at my wheels and tires.   8)

Both front tyres were put on at the same time and indeed they are the same make, type and size.  I'm positive that the wheels are therefore the same size.

Lockhart's giving it the once over including new ball joints, shocks and spindles so no doubt I'll figure out what the problem is.

Replacement of the spindles, worn out ball joints and dead shocks has fixed the problem! I can now go round corners!

However, last night I noticed an engine problem (see next post by me!!!!)
