I drove to work in de Stupie   today,   Not too bad of a drive and it keeps my driving skills on top.    Brake while rolling heel on accelerator pedal,  I had a motor bike behind me at a red light and I think It about killed him.  he actually backed away from the exhaust and oil smoke.  of maybe the raw petro smell,  I did not get to ask.    I got the shimmys,   I got those gosh darn shimmy blues.

I'll warp some innetube around some things this W/E and   give a shimmy  report.   SC

Wheel bearings?

« Reply #33 on: May 30, 2009, 08:05:13 AM »
I thought maybe the wheel bearings are loose,   Yep, the left wheel is a wiggler,   IF I torque the wheel bearing nut good ,It takes out alot of side to side and top to bottom wheel wiggle,   AM I right that the wheel nut should be kind of loose like 5 lbs?   I torqed it a wee bunch tighter than that right now to see if my stupie will break the 50mph with no shimy record..   If the I cant hear bearing poppin in there I'm Ok.  Right?  SC

Holy mackeral.  It got worse.  anything over 33mph and its s like I put too many nickels in the vibrating bed at Motel Six.

When I did the ball joints I took off that swing arm .  There is a off center washer that sets  the camber?  angles the wheel out or in.  Should I set both sides of stupie the same or is there a shade tree way to set the wheel angle?

No really accurate way to set toe or camber, you could use the tape measure and level method, but i am quite certain that your wheels aree a bit warped... they all are by now... so, any adjustment you try to make won't be accurate and/or worth the time to do it....

Typically, though, these wouldn't really cause vibration, shimmy condition... have you replaced the steering dampener?

For your terms, the skinny looking shock thingee on the front end that sits sideways..

I set the toe in all the way on both sides and the shimmy is gone.
Like my old buddy Sammy Hagar use to sing.
"I can drive... 55"

I also made the wheel bearing real tight.  they spin free but I think the wheel bearing should be tight then back off a 1/4 turn.  does that sound ok?  Or when the bearings are old,  it does not matter?   WIll it hurt the shaft?

The front end repairs so far.   2 ball joints,  1  right tie rod end,  Passenger  side brass anti shimming bushing.  Also the steering damper.  One of my front tires is oval.  SC

Put in on the back.  On a Super, the front tires must be round.

Roller brg's have to have a very slight amount of play because they pre-load when on the road.  Tighten the bearing down and then back off until you feel a very slight amount of play . Grab the wheel at 12:00 and 6:00 position and shake back and forth . If you tighten the brg to tight you burn the bearings up and maybe the spindle.

I couldn't believe the amount of difference when I replaced mine a while back... Glad stupie's on the road again.  Are you going to use him as a daily driver?

Stupie is like a rodeo bull,  It takes alot of courage to go for a ride.  I may not be man enough to daily drive Stupie,   I am greatly encouraged now that I can drive over 35mph with out getting carpull tunnel in my hands trying to hang on to the possessed steering wheel from hell.    I may make Stupie my " if its not raining or night time or too hot or cold driver.".   Today I'm in Navarre Fla with 3 of my teens and a another ones teen.   Oh ya and our new dog.  Chewbacca
