They do run forever, leaking and valve clacking and no power making the whole time. ;) After you get done buying the trans adapter and clutch, building the complete cooling system and engine mounting system, the complete exhaust system modifying the wiring harness and getting a engine managment setup of some sort not to mention the 1000 hours of fitting and modifying everything you just made or bought, you would be way better off planning to start the project with the engine you will be sticking with otherwise half of what you buy or build will end up in the trash heap. I only know cause I've lived it. :P  None of that even takes into consideration that a major engine type swap will destroy the value of the vehicle unless is it a super clean and efficient swap. Just food for thought, I love engine swaps myself but I have seen more bad than good come from them unless they are very well planned.

I'd just stick a worn out type 1 single port in it and learn to enjoy going slow . . .  ;D

As for engine swaps, I've done a bunch of 'em in my bus.  I swapped a 1600 that had a hole in the top of the block for one that didn't . . . when that one dropped an exhaust valve at 70 mph, I swapped that engine for one I through together from used parts at a swap meet . . . when that one started leaking oil faster than I could pour it in, I swapped if for a used one I bought for a couple hundred bucks . . . I think there were a couple more swaps in there somewhere that I missed.

And Nick . . . if you rebuild that 2.8 and decide not to put it in your bus, I need to swap the engine in my S-10 for one that doesn't leak 2 quarts of oil a week . . .  ;D

I don't think I'll hurt the value of my $150 bus! I just need to put the frame back under the rear half
