What to stuff into the back of the Ghia....

« on: August 27, 2012, 03:36:57 PM »
Yeah, I'm thinking of it.
Found a 90K mile 2.slow with wiring harness and all sensors for $350.
Can hear run and can drive it.

Let me know what you think.
I think that VW intended for a radiator in the front of a ghia, why else would they put all those holes up there?

Those are rust holes.  Don't you have a bus to finish up first before you go complety banana s ?

Nah, go for a real challenge and convert it to OBD1 Motronic.  Hardest part would be finding a place to mount the trigger wheel for the engine speed sensor.

The only trigger it needs is on the bottom of a Ruger 44 cal. Magnum Black Hawk. ;D ;D

Let me sell the bus and I'm gonna do it!
Engine in bus was for Ghia, so when it goes, I'll need an engine and this will be the best time to get an H2O in a Ghia.
@dubtch - I like the thought of a Subie, but If I am going to drive a VW then I want it to be all VW.
Drives me crazy when I see a nice Ford T bucket or a 50's or 60's with a SBChevy in it.

LOL that's cause every rednecks answer to everything is Mountain Dew and a 350/350 combo! ;D It's because of that I can completly understand your point HOWEVER....the best water cooled swap I think would be a Suby(long life and huge power potential). Costs way more than $300 though.  The 2.0 will also end up with a higher price tag when its all said and done too, best bet would be to just build a 100hp type 1 with Megasquirt and EDIS(this equals drivability and power ;)),bolt it in and go then order a trans before the one in the car chucks a kidney at a cat! :D Just my $.02 8)

I'm planning a V6 conversion in my bus. My brother in law is getting rid of his 2.8l V6 in his trooper for a 3.4 V6 and he said I could have it! So I'm looking at putting it in my westy

Can you give some guidance as to what a good reliable T1 or a T5 engine would be set up as.
I am a pretty stock kinda guy.

;D ;D It's pretty easy to get 100 hp from a type 1 these days, you dont even have to get real stupid with engine size a 17++ cc with good heads and a good cam choice will get you there, no need to go crazy on carbs either.  You could turbo it, but unless you wanted more than 100 it's probably best to keep it simple and N.A. it will run on pump gas, wont overheat and there won't be any body mods or tons of fabriction involved.  You can build or have built the engine and simply install it, done.

This is a great place to do some recon, check out the VW speed and drag racing section.  If you want boost there is a forum for that too and one for Fuel injection..not so much the stock stuff either. 8)

Not to hijack the thread or stomp on toes but the only thing I would do with a 2.8 is take it to the recycle joint and kick it off the truck before anyone knew what it was. :D The 2.8 is not worth the  amount of work needed to install in a bus.  Most busses leak oil and rattle just fine with the factory engine and as far as I can tell the 2.8 does it's best to mimic a type 4 in everythinig GM put it in. If your are interested in a 2.8 you would be worlds ahead with a 4.3, it would take about the same amount of work with a much better payoff. Supercharged 3.8 would be even better! IMHO ;D

The price is right! I read about a guy who put one in a bay window bus and drove it for a good while. He had just rebuilt it when he installed it. He had good luck for a few years and then broke the aftermarket crank. I figure I could do that for a while and then swap to something bigger or better. I have read about 3.1 kits but I'm not spending a lot of money on this. We will see. The project may never come to fruition but I'd rather have a 2.8 than a type 4 if I do get it back on the road!
