What to do???

« on: January 11, 2012, 11:40:32 AM »
Ok,
I am getting the new to me bus shell from Rick at R&M.
I know it is stripped, but it has a title.
I am thinking of doing one of the following with it:
1) cutting down the front and back to make a single wheel trailer out of it.
2) Cutting the back hatch area off and most of the roof area and making a home made extended cab out of it. - I know it'll not be worth much when done, but I have been wanting a truck and I am cheap...
3) making a shorty bus out of it.

#'s 2 and 3 will require a new beam and trans and engine.
I will also be getting an engine(s) from Rick so I am looking heavily at the shorty and the truck aspects.
I have a mig and want to use that baby!
IF I go with the shorty bus can I get a beetle trans to fit in a bay? - any one with any experience?
Thanks,
KC

I would have to see a photochop or something to better understand where you are wanting to cut and what you hope to get out of it. Sounds like it could be promising.

I like this idea! Been wanting to build one myself

If you are considering the other items...anything is possible!!!!

Can't wait to see this on thesamba's abortions thread!!!

I have a photo of what I want, it'll retain the slidding door!
I'll post it later.
I have decided that I am going to do the truck idea.
Nick, I might need those carbs we talked about at the christmas party.
You bought my 1st choice bus!
I used to own that green one of yours remember?

that's what he told me. I've been driving it around in the evenings. Pretty nice little bus.

We can talk about the carbs. I take it that you don't want the motor now that you have cleared out R&M?

I think you are going to be stuck using a Type-2 tranny shorty or not without doing major work. Have you ever driven a shorty bus ?  How short a bus do you want ?  I worked with a Dude who had one with about 30" between the wheels.   You couldn't start from a traffic light without standing up on the rear bumper. He bought a big time ticket  for doing wheel stands on Brainerd Rd and was told by the police to park it or go to jail. It would come off a wheel stand and bounce over to the next lane. I wouldn't get in it. ;D ;D

I LIKE that grey bus/truck.  Most of the home-made trucks I've ever seen looked VERY home-made, but that one looks pretty cool!   8)

The grey one is what I'm after.
I have some other shots of it.
I still need a beam though to get this home...

I vote for the short bus on a Beetle pan, It will be long enough to be somewhat stable and you can use easy to get (read cheap)parts!  No worries about cv axles and expensive transaxles, complex engine mounts, AND I just so happen to have a rolling pan! ;D  I must say the pan is supposed to go to another person BUT if they don't end up using it, it will be up for sale soon!! :D

I was wondering about doing that as well, but was worried about the steering set up, but I guess once you've made this decision that will just have to work itself out...
As for the T1 trannie in a bus = wheelie, I say AUTOSTICK.
put it in high and floor it and I guarantee it will not pop a wheelie...
BUT I have made a decision to go truck with this.
Trying to source a trannie is going to take persistance.

Thought about it, but it needs some serious repairs.

I might have an extra autostick or two... and a torque converter and a bunch of goodies, I'd let go of....

I agree with David (about a bus ???) Waiting till I have proper funding for a bus trans will allow me to not have to get all crazy with new mounts from KCW or such.
The Autostick would keep your little mini-westie from wheelies!
You have all the parts - Just do it...
KC
Oh yeah, I am thinking of cutting down an old westie top as a tonneau cover for the bed, haven't decided if I'll build a bed and put in the treasure chests or not, but that is just a bunch of extra work.

There is one on detroits Craigslist for $100 disc to disc with master cylinder. If you are interested, I might be able to pick it up for you. It looks to only be a couple miles from the NAIAS
