What happened to the good shops/ auto techs?

« on: May 12, 2009, 08:42:50 PM »
So a week or so ago I hit a big hole in the road where they are doing construction on Cloud Springs... immediately after my alignment was really bad and it pulled me to the right.

I took it to coker tire this morning because they did a great job on my mexi and my bus in late 07 when i took it to them... unfortunately theyve changed staff since then. I told them NOT to straighten the steering wheel and align it because i'd had it off and put it back on wrong... but even after telling them 3 times they straightened it anyhow "from underneath" this is not good...
the bad thing tho is that once i got the car back it seemed to pull even harder to the right... they made the toe slightly negative "to compensate for the positive caster" even though i don't see how that really helped... it made it worse

So after thinking about it i took the car to pep boys where i got my tires.. thinking i may have messed up the tire... they switched the tires from one side to another and no change...

so i get home and i am frustrated wondering what is wrong with my car... so i go and look at it myself even though i am sick with most likely allergies and get all stuffy and sneezy outside... but hey i gotta fix my car!

So after like two seconds of looking at my car i see something is messed up in the front end... its obvious... but what it is i am not sure...

It would take about 2 hours to tell you what to do. This is not your normal VW front end that you are use to. .  See if you can find a tech manual on type 3  and you can see what I'm talking about. There are a couple of special tools to do the job .  Parts may be a problem to find.
Your front axle has 2 torsion bar that look like the rear torsion bars. They cross each other in the beam. Then there is a upper stabilizer bar across the top of the beam.
If you want to you can come by the house and I will show you my factory parts manual showing all of this stuff.

Thanks, I have the bentley that shows me what to do, but there is no mention of any special tools except that bubble angle leveler thing...  everyone seems to think this is a relatively easy job... what special tools am I going to need?

I've never really taken apart the front end... what's different on the 71 fasty than a regular bug or other vw?

I'm not gonna come over cause I'm still kinda sick... and not really sure I know how to get to your house anymore ;)

The only thing that the front axles have in common is the concept.   The protractor ( bubble leveling thing) is one of the expensive tools and the 2  pre-set"C" clamps that are used to reduce the pre-load between the upper and lower trailing arms to adjust the upper stabilizer bar end-play.(important)
Like I said ,the car has real torsion bars and not the torsion springs like Type-1 and Type-2.
Its not that bad of a job except that you have to have the bars set correctly or she will "lay down" on you on one side.

And to answer your question, the only thing that has happened to the good  techs is they are hiding at home because they have grown tired of arguing with people about cars.... since the customer usually seems to have a better idea of how to fix the car than they do.  That's my view at least.

Those coming into this line of work now suck.  plain and simple.  They are not made of the stuff the old timers were.  I'd rather be known as a mechanic over a technician any old day.

At least a mechanic can figure out how to actually fix something....without a scan tool.

WELL !!!  Ditto,Ditto. Ditto !!!!!
I think you have just about covered that point "GrassHopper".  I don't think I can top those statements and I'm not even going to try.
The only thing I could add would be about people who are not even in the trade telling me how and what to do to fix their car because they read a book
somewhere along the line  I will say that not all people are this way,
but the bunch that does ruins the whole day for  MECHANICS .
  Can you say AMEN ??

Testify, brother!.... =D>

I blame the accesibility of info. on the internet.  Most customer related arguments around here start with them saying "I saw on the internet...."

After that, it's pretty much on like Donkey Kong....

I like how when I go in and start telling them how they didn't align my car properly they start explaining to me what caster, camber and toe are... Why would I be telling them that they took it out of spec if i didn't understand what i was talking about? And honestly, why does it even matter if I understand it if I understand enough to know it's out of spec...

Just because I'm a girl doesn't mean I don't know what I am talking about... i hate when they try to dumb things down for me... And I especially hate when the service writers try to explain something that they don't understand...

When I went to pep boys a few weeks ago to have my wheels rebalanced they sold me some new washers for my lug nuts because they said that may be why i was having issues... so i humored them and spent a couple dollars on new washers knowing that wasn't my issue... while I was in the store getting them, the tech was explaining to some old lady that my wheels were hubcentric and that these would make sure the wheel seated properly... so when I got back the lady asked me what it meant that they were hubcentric. I kinda covered for the guy and told her that he probably meant to say lugcentric and that the weight of the car rested on the lugnuts... but I'm sure she didn't get it wrong... that would be pretty crazy for her to make something up like that.

Why indeed?....
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, because you actually have said knowledge.  But, you'd be surprised how many people do not, claim that they do, and will argue with you about it till the cows come home....

I dunno.... I think I'm just gonna start mowing lawns for a living.....

Dangit I just got a new tractor mower stay on your side of the river like the treaty says!!
Honestly I lovw working on old vw's I'm just not a people person when it comes to working on someones car. I'm kinda crazy that way thinking people want the best for their car and all. Most want it cheap and fast...a real bad combination in my opinion.

As for your type 3 problem seriously I's convert it to type 1 suspension. Because you'll search high and low for those parts and they will cost if you find them and..............I'm lazy.

the type 3 is a whole different beast... I would NEVER put a type one front end on it... is that even safe? and why bother when type 3 parts are readily available? Granted the first phone call I made on parts (really wasn't a parts call but ended up that way) I didn't get a price cause i wasn't looking... second call was more than I wanted to pay and 3rd was offered a whole beam free... so it took me about 20-30 min to get a whole front end free...

Point is... 3 type 3 beams in 30 min... and I honestly wasn't even looking very hard...

There was an error while liking
