Weber carb issues, I think...

« on: November 18, 2005, 05:10:15 PM »
Hey, guys, new to the site. Didn't know you where here 'til recently. I live about an hour and a half from Chattanooga so hopfully I'll be able to catch some of your events soon. I'm having a problem with my '74 Beetle. Going down the road it runs great but if I get stopped at a light it wants to die unless I pump the gas pedal.  It also won't idle at startup without me babying it. It's really sluggish off the line but once you get some momentum it's great.I've adjusted the idle multiple times with no luck with the dying problems. I used to race at Winchester and the Holley carbs we ran would blow a powervalve if it backfired through the carb and create problems but I know nothing about these Webers. It's a 40mm Weber and is only 1-2 years old. When I first got the car I had to clean out the tank where it had a little water in the gas, I've changed fuel filters and keep either STP gas treatment or HEET in it. I did have it backfire through the carb with me once but not knowing the Webers I wanted your opinion before I jumped in. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hey, Welcome to our site.  You didn't say what kind of Weber or if your engine is modified or not. If you could give us some info on what you are running, we might be able to help. :?:

It's a 40mm Weber two barrel, the motor has the 88cc bore kit but the previous owner said he went back with the stock cam. I'm gonna double check with him about the heads, can't remember what he told me on them, and I'll get back with ya'. Thanks for the welcome and interest!

Not that I have an answer or anything, but are you running the stock distributor or a 009?  Or another variation?

I have "heard" that you need to set your timing different with the 009.  As in my case, I was told to set the timing to 28-32 degrees BTDC for the 009 with my 34 PICT.  Have I done it yet?  No.

Hey, did that carb set-up work good before, and just start giving problems,  or has it been troublesome from the time you put it on??? Bugtech, could that be a manifold heat problem?  it is starting to get cold out there.  does your setup have the heat tubes running up from the exhaust to the bottom of your manifold under the carb?  could they be plugged up?

Alot of these questions I'm gonna have to resaerch, I've just had the car a month. It does have the heat tubes from the exhaust to the bottom of the manifold. Are they plugged up? I don't know. I do know it was 10-15 degrees warmer today than the last time I drove it and it ran alot better, only minor hesitations on initial acceleration but picked up quickly. It is a baja setup, so the motor is exposed with none of the "insulation" ,if you want to call it that, it would have with an enclosed compartment. I'm waiting on word on the distributor(I think it's stock) and head specs. Thanks!

I don't the first thing about non-stock carbs and this does sound like a carb problem, but don't overlook something simple like the points being burnt or not gapped correctly.  I have a bone stock 1600 single port in my 73 bus.  A couple of weeks ago it started dieing at stop signs and sputtering on take offs.  The colder it was, the worse the symptoms were.  I was sure I was going to have to pull the carb and clean it out.  But, after a couple of minutes of filing on the points and resetting the gap and timing, it ran like a top again.

Sounds like my problem to a tee. I'm gonna go though the points and plugs and see what happens. Thanks!
