Do you have a gen. or a alt. ?     Some Bosch alt have the regulater built  internal while the Motorola alt is normaly under the back seat (driver side).   Both of these should have the part #  stamped on them.  If you have a gen. ,there is a new style solid state reg that is available that is much better than the older ones.  You can call Al Johnson Volvo/VW in Dalton Ga for this one. About $35.00 ?
Pay very close to this tip. DO NOT BUY ANY AFTER MARKET REG.
like Auto-Zone etc.etc.  They will not last anytime and can burn your gen. to the ground.  USE ONLY BOSCH on anything electrical forsure on a A/C Volkswagen. Your call.
Zen can inlighten you on this subject bigtime.

Like Ret.Bugtech said . . . get the new style solid state regulator by Bosch.  If you go to Al Johnson's VW in Dalton, all you need to tell them is that you need a Bosch solid state regulator for a 12 volt Beetle generator.  They'll give you the right one.  Unless they've gone up a bunch in the last two years or so, it'll set you back around 35 bucks . . . you'll save that in asprin in the next 6 months.

If you want to save a dollar or two, here's a link to one from CIP1.com:

Thank you all ! When I removed the shroud , I found a bare wire which caused the whole problem! Shorted out the volt reg . I repaired the wire and added the new BOSCH reg and the light went off. I'm grateful to yall!......Fred :D :D  :D  :D  :D  \:D/
