Vacuum Advance

« on: June 23, 2009, 12:01:26 AM »
Hi I'm new to your forum. I love the old mechanics training filmstrips! Actually very helpful. I have a 66 beetle with 30 PICT-1 carb. I've noticed that my distributor does not have the vacuum advance. The place where the diaphragm connects to the carburetor is plugged with a line and screw. Is this standard operating procedure or did someone get lazy. I know from past experience that the vacuum advance could be problematic.

Also can you recommend a skilled carburetor rebuild shop. I live in Cleveland Ohio.

If your dist. is a 009 it should run fine with your 30mm carb. But you are going to have to be sure it is a 009 and not a vacuum dist. that someone removed the vac. unit.

The distributor looks to be recent vintage, sort of like the pictures I've seen at several on-line parts distributors. It doesn't appear to have the diaphragm removed. Is the vacuum advance not required for efficient operation?

It uses a mechanical advance system versus the vac. advance.  If it is an actual Bosch dist., then it should have a "009" in the part number.  the new taiwan ones are often not marked with anything.

The thread on theSamba might be of interest. I was frustrated with the 009 Bosch distributor until I finally figured out the offset and that someone had installed the dizzy dog 180 degrees off.
