vacum advance hard to move

« on: October 06, 2006, 06:32:00 PM »
Just when think everything is doing good, found that the vacum advance on the distributor decides not to go in and out like it's suppose to.. was working great, moved in and out veriy easily.
Found this evenign it doesn't want to hardly move at all.  If I twis the points plate around the spring doesn't have a enough force to pull it back. If I sux on the unit, it doesn't want to open all the way.
the plate that the points go on just verily will twist, not sure if this is due to the vacum unit itself..
Can these vacum units go bad to where it's so stiff to move one way or the other?
Any ideas would be appreicated. Anything to check? buy?
I think this is the 205 distributor
thanks
Ron

Ron, More than likey the plate is sticking due to no lube on the shaft. I have taken the points out and took the vac. off and poured some PB Blaster into the dist. case and let it sit for a while to free it up. If you feel brave you could take the whole thing apart and clean things up.

Is the alternative a distributor?  Been spraying  Liqud wrench in it, even though it's moving, still doesn't quite return back to the normal position..

Does it hurt if the LW goes down the shaft?

Thanks
Ron

Ron ,  If you cannot free it up , you can replace the dist or take it apart to clean it up.  Up to you. If you want to replace it, stick with a dist. with a vacumn unit. The 009 centrifical will give you a big headache on your car.  A little "nut buster" going down the shaft should not hurt anything, but you could take the dist out to prevent this if you wanted to.

thanks,
Everything I've read is to say away from the 009, seems it's only good for racing or a engine that's built.

Bad thing, just about every site I've been to only sells the 009. Looks like CIP sells the "205 model" or the vacum advanced.

I don't mind taking it out, It's putting it back in that worries me..afraid may get it way out of time..

Ron , Rotate your engine so #1 cly is on TDC on your pulley and the rotor is pointing to # 1 by looking at the notch on the dist. case. The dist will only fit one way on the drive gear in the case because of the off-set of the gear. You then can remove the dist. by taking the 13mm nut off the tie down clamp. You can leave the 10mm adjustment alone.

Hey David,
Well got'er out and tried to clean, after putting dist back in, seems the advance wants to now stay up around 30 degrees whether it's idling or running at 2500 rpms. doesn't  change much.

May ride up to Chattanooga next Saturday to see the parents.
I cleaned the carb, but still feel it may be worth seeing if you would go back through it for me. If you did, maybe I could bring the Dist by and let you look at it as well and see if it's worth buying another one. Feel something is not quite right in the dist or the carb or both.

Thanks
Ron

Ron, I thought you had points .   Anyway no big deal.  The problem is that your vacumn unit is bad.The diapham has a hole. You can suck on the pipe and it will advance ,but will not stay put. You can hear the leak and your Ing. timing would be bouncing all over the place.
I'll be going down to my friend shop in the morning. He has a big box of dist. and will try to find a vac.unit. This is very good dist. and we need to try to save it if we can.
What is the bag of little stuff for ?

In the baggy is a ground strap and a spacer.

When I first got the car, the ground wire/strap from the points plate to the dist was broke, so made a new ground strap with ring terminals,

that's in there along with the pieces to connect to back to the points plate

The other half moon piece is a spacer for the Pertonix if we needed to raise the sensor.

Glad to hear the dist is in good shape, wondered about the bottom of it.. When I got the carb reuild kit, the local foreign parts place tried his best to get me to order a 009..

009 would be the last resort although it would probley run on your car, but I think you would be happier with the vac. unit. Keep your fingers crossed. [-o<  [-o<

It may, but the forgiveness factor sounds better than maybe having to keep foot on the gas, learning to sync everything together, especially if the wife drives..
