Type 3 automatic question...

« on: November 12, 2009, 09:58:02 PM »
OK, I think that this will NOT work, but I don't know why.
I think that I know:
-a universal case will fit a t1 OR a t3.
-A type 3 came with a "real" automatic.
-The trans mount holes on a T1 and a t3 engine are the same.
-The shifter assembly on a t1 and t3 are probably different.

If the first 3  things are right can a real t3 automatic be put into a Beetle?
I am expecting to have to change the shifter and possibly the whole shift rod asembly.
any way just a thought...
Am I the only one that has thought of this...?
KC :D

I've seen one or two in the VW magazines before, so, yes, it can be done.  I have no idea what all is involved, but I don't think it's just a "bolt in" conversion.  If it was, I'd think you would see more of them.

Well then, you missed the mark.  SC would have said something more like "I've got this old Subaru with a crushed top, but it's got a good automatic transmission . . . "
